"I was surprised by how much it has evolved." That was my reaction when I visited the only one of its kind nationwide (as of July 2023) Calpis brand concept shop. July 7th is known as Tanabata in Japan, but it is also Calpis Day, as it was born on July 7, 1919. I saw a Calpis promotion POP at a nearby supermarket at the end of June, which reminded me of this shop located in Hankyu Umeda, which I hadn't visited yet. So, I decided to visit the shop on my day off. The shop opened last year in 2022, and until now, they have been offering Calpis jelly in a can with a separate sauce to mix, as well as freshly made drinks combining Calpis with fermented foods like sweet sake and yogurt. Starting from March this year, they have also started selling a new product called Calpis Fermented Butter, which is used in Fermented Butter Sablé, a baked confectionery. First, about the Calpis jelly, it looks similar to jelly drinks you see in some vending machines, but the bottle-shaped can contains only jelly, more like House Foods' Fruité. The taste, combined with the texture of the jelly, was a new and delicious sensation, easy to drink unlike the usual Calpis. Next, about the Fermented Butter Sablé. Calpis is made from skim milk removed during the production process, and the fermented butter, Calpis Butter, is made from the removed fat. Calpis Fermented Butter is made by further fermenting Calpis Butter with lactic acid bacteria. The Sablé made using Calpis Fermented Butter was my first time trying a confectionery made with it, and I felt a refreshing taste similar to Calpis and yogurt, along with a deep richness. I have tried some elegant Sablés before, but I think it is very rare to find a baked confectionery that also has such a refreshing taste. Lastly, I ordered the limited-time Lychee-scented Sour Cream and Calpis drink from the 5 types of Calpis drinks they offered. While you may occasionally see fruit juice-flavored Calpis in convenience stores, the refreshing and deep flavor resulting from combining Calpis with another fermented food (in this case, sour cream) was worth trying at least once, in my opinion. Whether you are a Calpis fan or looking for unique souvenirs or gifts in the Umeda area, I recommend visiting this Calpis shop at Hankyu at least once.
