June 18, 2022 (Sat) First visit to "bit better," a hamburger and coffee specialty shop where you can enjoy the seasonal views of Maruyama and Miyanomori. I had bookmarked this place a few years ago when passing by the area and finally decided to visit for lunch during my trip to Hokkaido. Located just a short walk from Hokkaido Shrine's Reiwa Torii to the west parking lot, right off North 1st Street and Miyanosawa Street, it is conveniently situated for visits to Maruyama Park or Hokkaido Shrine. I called on the day to make a reservation, but the response was vague about the exact time, suggesting around 1:30 pm. Despite feeling a bit uneasy, I went ahead and made the reservation. Arriving a little before 1:30 pm, the private parking lot (2 spaces) was full, so I parked at the Hokkaido Shrine's parking lot. "bit better" is known for its hamburgers made with Towa Lake Wagyu and Hokkaido Whey-fed pork, served in Igayaki pottery, and is recommended for a "slightly special day." Upon arriving at the restaurant before 1:30 pm, it was fully booked, so I had to wait outside for about 15 minutes. Once seated, I found myself at a table closest to the entrance, which didn't feel very cozy, and the lack of air conditioning around the table made it quite stuffy. The hamburger menu offers six options, and I chose the following two that caught my eye:
- Hokkaido Wasabi and Perilla Japanese-style Dashi Sauce Hamburger Lunch: 1,780 yen
- Hokkaido-style Sauce Hamburger with grated apple, myoga, and scallions: 1,690 yen
Initially, the menu prices seemed a bit high for a suburban Sapporo location, but considering that each set includes a 180g hamburger, salad, mini soup, rice, and a drink, it felt reasonable. The first dish served was a salad with 10 different types of vegetables listed on the blackboard in the restaurant, making it a visually appealing plate. The soup, made with white dashi and kelp tea, had a delicate flavor that was very soothing. After waiting for more than 30 minutes, the main dish finally arrived, served with the restaurant's specialty rice (a blend of low-pesticide Nanatsuboshi rice and 32 types of grains). The timing of the main dish felt quite late for a lunch service. The owner, who seemed to be the only one working, was bustling around the restaurant, struggling to keep up with the full house. Due to the long wait, the taste of the hamburger, while good, felt somewhat ordinary and didn't quite live up to the specialness I had anticipated. Before finishing the meal, the owner accidentally bumped his arm on the acrylic board for COVID-19 prevention, causing a glass of water on the table to spill. While it was quickly cleaned up, it created a somewhat awkward atmosphere. The acrylic board, which I assumed wouldn't be returned, was wiped and placed back after a while. Despite the neighboring table being vacant and the lunch service being over, it was returned to my table again. The post-meal drink was then served, and I chose the Pear & Grapefruit Juice, but the lingering impression of the previous accident made it hard to fully enjoy the drink. The overall slow service and unexpected delays during lunch made me feel like I made a mistake in choosing this restaurant. There was no apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience upon leaving. I hope they can improve their customer service in the future. Thank you for the meal.
