G‐G-MOMOCHI
Located on the first floor of a building across from Senken Zen Temple along Takatori-Meiji Street in Sawara Ward, Fukuoka City, is "Udon Kichi," a popular udon restaurant. Established in 1977, it is the oldest udon shop in the area. The owner, Shoichi Ogata, and the always cheerful proprietress, Mitsuyo, run the shop together. They are known for their freshly made, cut, and boiled homemade noodles that are delightfully chewy. While the classic "Gobo Tempura Udon" and "Maru Tempura Udon" are popular choices, the spicy "Curry Udon" has also received rave reviews. The owner is often seen diligently preparing ingredients early in the morning, a sight that commands respect. The restaurant used to offer delivery service, but now only serves customers in the shop. On this visit, I arrived for lunch as the first customer. I ordered the highly recommended "Handmade Curry Udon." The curry broth had a spicy aroma, and it was served with boiled egg and plenty of chopped green onions on top. The broth was not too thick and had a blend of spices and dashi stock without using starch. The noodles were slightly thin, flat, and chewy, typical of Hakata-style udon. At first, it didn't seem too spicy, but as I continued eating, I could feel a gentle sweat forming on my forehead. It was delicious and satisfying. The portion was generous, and I left feeling full and content. I will definitely be back for more. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a boom in "takeout" sales, and Udon Kichi also offers this service. Although only the "donburi" menu is displayed outside, the proprietress assured me that udon is also available for takeout.
