Chun Shui Tang Fukuoka, Hakata Station area is a Taiwanese tea cafe where you can enjoy Taiwanese tea, noodles, dim sum, sweets, and drinks in a casual and affordable manner. Takeout is also available. They have only one store in Kyushu, Fukuoka, with a branch in Tenjin as well. Located in the basement of Amu Plaza, but Hakata Station is quite large, so head towards the restaurant area HAKATA9. It's roughly at the back (towards Deitos). In December 2019, I decided to have some tea and stroll around Hakata. Luckily, there was no usual long line, but surprisingly, there was a line for takeout. Depending on the timing, there might be two lines. The exterior is glass-walled, and depending on the seating, it seems like your eyes might meet those outside. The interior features Taiwanese wall art and modern Sino-Western decor. The main seating is two-person tables, but there are also sofas. Menu (excluding tax): Drinks from 420 yen, Noodle dishes from 750 yen, Sweets from 500 yen, Dim sum at 400 yen each. They offer lunch sets, children's menus, and various sets. I ordered the Sesame Peanut Tangyuan (drink set) for 1050 yen, which includes Tangyuan and a drink of your choice. The Sesame Peanut Tangyuan comes in black sesame and white sesame varieties. It's a warm type with peanuts mixed with ground sesame in a sugar paste inside the white balls. The green one has matcha-flavored balls with red bean paste, while the white one does not. It's colorful with three different colors. The soup has a hint of ginger but is quite mild. It's similar to zenzai but not very sweet, more like a simple and gentle Taiwanese style hot dessert. For the drink, I chose Tapioca Soy Milk Tieguanyin Tea, which is 550 yen if ordered separately. The tapioca cooked in brown sugar is chewy, and I chose soy milk, but they also have regular milk. It's lightly sweet and gentle in flavor. The tea is said to be Tieguanyin from Taiwan, and it's a well-known tea from Maokong in Taipei. It's different from the typical Oolong tea in Japan, and the quality makes a difference. It's not very astringent and has a delicate aroma. The combination of gentle soy milk, faint tea aroma, and plenty of tapioca makes it a satisfying drink. I wanted to eat Tangyuan, so I visited, but the set was a good deal. When I hesitated due to the large portion, they kindly offered to make the drink for takeout. Great service. The staff explained the tea well and was very friendly. The drink with a little classic ice was perfect for the train ride back, so enjoy it before it dilutes. Currently, Amu Plaza is operating with shortened hours, so please check before visiting.
