Two days after my initial post. Postscript: The second day was even more delicious than the first day. Why is that? It was incredibly delicious. Therefore, I think the review below may not convey the deliciousness very well. However, it was definitely worth the price of 2,914 yen! I will revise my rating upwards. I bought this at Hakata Hankyu the day after the 2015 October concert (which unfortunately got canceled) for Ayumi Hamasaki fan club members. I've always considered Fukusaya as the best castella. I used to buy it near the entrance of Daimaru in the past. It's the original castella from Nagasaki! This time, I went to buy the cube version, but when I was looking at the showcase, they told me, "This is usually only available for pre-order." So, why is it here? I thought, but it doesn't give me a reason to buy it just because it's limited to pre-orders. So, I asked, "What's different about it?" and they said it has more sugar and eggs and less flour compared to regular castella. I wondered what that meant, but the deciding factor was the price. It was a whopping 2,914 yen for a product that didn't have two pieces or double the width of a regular one. That high price really raised my expectations! It's more cost-effective to eat something expensive and delicious than something cheap and ordinary! I'm a shallow brand-oriented person who believes that expensive things are always good. So, I opened the Gomaki Castella! When I opened the red wrapping paper that matched the bag, it looked like a paulownia box with a wrapping paper and another layer of packaging. Then, I opened it again, and there was a bag. And then, the familiar white box of castella. Finally, the Gomaki Castella appeared (^○^) It was like a lump of luxury sweets!! Amazing! It had a cut line so you didn't need a knife! I took a bite (・o・) It was completely different from any castella I had ever eaten before. Well, saying it was completely different might be an exaggeration <(_ _)> Even though it was supposed to have less flour, I could feel the powder, and it was incredibly soft and chewy. It was yellow because it had a lot of eggs. Despite having a lot of sugar, it wasn't overly sweet at all! According to the description inside the product, "The baking process takes a long time. The balance of the upper and lower heat requires advanced skill, and only a few skilled artisans can achieve it." Surely, it's food for the elite. It was a very elegant and delicious treat.
