Maruman Sushi is one of the many popular sushi restaurants in the Tenjinbashi-suji shopping street area, known for its casual dining and open hours from lunchtime. I visited this restaurant on a holiday afternoon for a sushi and drinks session. The restaurant has a long history, dating back to 1947, giving it a somewhat traditional feel. The establishment is a two-story building with a counter seating area and spacious table seating on the first floor, while the second floor has private tatami rooms for larger gatherings.
I started with a refreshing draft beer and ordered a variety of dishes, including a sashimi platter with sea bream, octopus, yellowtail, salmon, and fatty tuna. The sea bream had a firm texture and great flavor, while the octopus was chewy and delicious. The yellowtail was decent, and the salmon was fatty and tender. The fatty tuna was also flavorful but slightly watery. I then tried the grilled sweetfish, which had a mix of dry and tender meat. The sea bream head simmered in broth was overly salty for my taste. The fatty tuna sushi had a lot of fat and a unique white color, which was not to my liking. The recommended thick roll was filled with ikura, shrimp, tarako, egg, and sweet-savory cooked shiitake mushrooms, offering a flavorful combination.
Overall, the dishes were standard for a casual sushi restaurant, and the service was average. The total cost for one person, including drinks, was around 6000 yen. Maruman Sushi is a convenient option for a leisurely drink and meal from day to night.
After noticing the name "Fujio Oshizu" on the restaurant's sign, I was curious about the history of Maruman Sushi and its founder. Upon further research, I discovered some fascinating facts about the restaurant's roots, which added an unexpected twist to my dining experience.
