Noriaki
A quick Monday with an early finish. Unable to endure my hunger all the way to Kyoto, I decided to stop by Umeda Food Street on my way home. It was just before 12 o'clock, the time when places start to get crowded. I didn't have a specific target in mind, but everywhere seemed busy. Just as I was about to give up, I passed by a pathway I don't usually take and was drawn in by the inviting atmosphere. Without any prior information, I found myself entering the restaurant. It was nearly full, with a large counter surrounding the kitchen in a C shape. The spacing between seats was quite narrow, almost like a pre-social distancing era. Once seated, I was promptly served tea and a warm towel, and quickly placed my order. It's best to decide before entering, as the service is quite efficient. I ordered the "Mini Tempura Rice Bowl and Mini Duck Hot Pot Set" (950 yen). It seemed to be the most popular choice. Let's wait for it to arrive. In the open kitchen in front of me, the duck hot pot (both regular and mini size) was being prepared skillfully, and the tempura fryer was also busy frying multiple servings at once. The dishes were served promptly, almost in the order they were ordered. The efficiency and attention to detail of the veteran staff in managing such a busy restaurant were truly impressive. The "Mini Tempura Rice Bowl and Mini Duck Hot Pot Set" (950 yen) arrived. The bubbling duck hot pot was almost the same size as the regular one, despite being called "mini". The duck hot pot seasoned with sansho pepper had a delicious broth! The sweetness of the green onions was also a nice touch. The hot pot consisted of duck meat, tofu, green onions, and a beaten egg for finishing, creating a simple yet flavorful dish. As for the mini tempura rice bowl, it was just the right size for me. It included shrimp, eggplant, sweet potato, and broccoli tempura. The addition of broccoli was an interesting twist. The tempura was freshly fried and paired well with the slightly subdued sauce. With a side of pickles, I quickly finished it all. Both dishes were truly delicious. The restaurant is small and fast-paced, not ideal for a leisurely meal, but it offers high-quality lunch options at a reasonable price. I would recommend trying the "Tempura and Egg Rice Bowl" next time.
