Located in the Emisu-nishi area of Naniwa Ward, this restaurant offers okonomiyaki, yakisoba, modern-yaki, and tonpei-yaki that can be ordered anytime. They also have daily specials, potato salad, pickled vegetables, and small hot pots that the owner, affectionately referred to as "oyaji" (by me), prepares using whatever ingredients are available that day. They even source delicious meat from a butcher in Kinuta Market, so if they have it, they might serve steak or yakiniku as well. I first visited in the first half of 2022 when a friend's CEO (who often appears in my stories) coincidentally rented a second home near this restaurant and became a regular due to his love for retro atmospheres and the friendly character of the owner, as well as the food and beer they enjoy from noon onwards. He invited me to join him, and I have been a frequent customer ever since.
The retro ambiance of the restaurant initially made it daunting to enter alone, but the warmth and homely cooking style of the owner quickly won me over. About ten years ago, the owner's wife, who used to run the restaurant with a few staff members, fell ill, and the owner, who was originally a pharmacist specializing in Chinese medicine, took over the business and care for his wife. He now provides advice on family members' health changes and recommends beneficial foods based on his knowledge of traditional medicine. The restaurant also attracts foreign tourists staying in nearby guesthouses, drawn by its placed signboard. The okonomiyaki made by the owner reminds me of the ones my mother used to make at home, and it suits my taste perfectly.
I recently visited for a year-end greeting and took home a limited-edition New Year's platter with a celebratory sea bream. The entrance may seem intimidating, but once you muster the courage to enter, the owner's friendly and knowledgeable demeanor will warm your heart, making you inevitably become a regular like me. The restaurant allows smoking and has limited seating, so I use this opportunity to strengthen my lung capacity by minimizing my breathing! It's a small establishment, so you quickly become friends with the regulars. It's the perfect place to experience the essence of Osaka. Plus, it's just a few steps away from Tsutenkaku, allowing you to enjoy a beautiful view of the tower.
