Crab, blowfish, and conger eel, live fish dishes, and sushi at Yamato in Yao City. It's a blog by an old man from Kawachi about his daily meals and occasional drinks. Located about a 15-minute walk from either Kintetsu Yao Station, Kintetsu Kyuhoji-guchi Station, or JR Kyuhoji Station, or Yao Station on the Kansai Main Line, it's a place where my partner, his mother, and I have our annual family year-end party. We always choose this place near Yao High School, where we've been coming for over 30 years. It's also where we had our first meeting with both families. The entire building was rebuilt in October 2018 and looks very beautiful. We were shown to our usual private room for four, with a sunken kotatsu table, which is very much appreciated by us with sore legs and backs. We had reserved, so the hot pot and appetizers were already set up. For the course hot pot, you can choose between crab suki with broth or crab chirashi with ponzu sauce. We always go for the crab suki. We started with some drinks: draft beer for me and oolong tea for my partner and his mother. We had the crab course (Akarui) for 12,650 yen, which includes appetizers, crab hot pot, crab sashimi, crab vinegar, crab tempura, grilled crab, crab miso, crab egg tofu, porridge, and fruit. The crab miso and crab egg tofu were delicious. The crab sashimi was fresh and sweet, and the crab vinegar was just the right amount of sweet and sour. The grilled crab had a nice balance of smoky and sweet flavors. The freshly fried crab tempura was crispy and light, and the crab tempura batter with rice was a must-try. We also ordered the crab tempura batter separately, as it's quite popular and tends to sell out quickly. It doesn't have a lot of crab on it, but it's great with rice. Overall, it was a delightful dining experience, and we left feeling satisfied and happy.

One of the winter delights for people in Kansai is to take a bus to places like Kinosaki, Hokuriku, Tottori, Tango, famous for crabs, and indulge in eating crabs. This has become a tradition. In recent years, due to the threat of COVID-19, it has been difficult to travel as freely as before. In such times, restaurants like Kanidoraku play an important role. There is a hidden crab restaurant in Yao that I visited for the first time. The restaurant seems to have been recently renovated, with a clean and pleasant interior. I ordered the Crab Set Meal (Wami) for 8140 yen, which included various crab dishes such as crab sukiyaki, crab vinegar, grilled crab, crab tempura, chawanmushi, crab chirashi sushi, red miso soup, and fruit. While the freshness may not be as good as certain chain stores, each dish was satisfying. The service was not as efficient as certain chain stores, but overall, the experience was enjoyable. Visited the restaurant to celebrate my father's 81st birthday. Despite making a reservation, we were only given a 2-hour time limit due to the restaurant being fully booked. It was my first time visiting since the renovation, and the place looked incredibly beautiful. We ordered the crab hot pot course. The crab was a bit messy, but overall, I think they did a good job (although it was a bit disappointing when crab shell ended up in my mouth). The most disappointing part was being rushed out of our seats after 2 hours. Also, the service during payment was not satisfactory.

The crab tempura is plump and juicy. It's very delicious. We continue to eat the hot pot. We only eat the crab legs as they become tough if left in the pot. When it comes to crab, it has to be Yamato! When it comes to birthdays, it has to be crab! This winter was my fourth time at Yamato, and once again I took some home! The meat was plentiful and satisfying to eat! The last porridge was also delicious! I found out that you can take home sashimi. It was so sweet♡♡ I want to eat it at least one more time this season!

Yamato is a renowned crab restaurant in Yao City, with over 50 years of history. Last year, they renovated and reopened the second floor as a dining area while converting the first floor into a parking lot. The interior is still very new and clean, with a fresh scent. We arrived about 15 minutes early for our 7:15 reservation and waited by the blowfish tank before being seated in the Ume-Ni private room. We ordered the Crab Hot Pot Course "Akari" for ¥8,800, which included various crab dishes like crab sashimi, crab miso, and crab tempura. The meal was accompanied by a large draft beer for ¥800. The dishes were all delicious, with highlights including the crab sashimi and the crab tempura. The new addition to the course, the crab egg tofu, was also a delightful surprise. The restaurant also offers blowfish dishes, known for their quality. Overall, the dining experience at Yamato was exceptional, and we look forward to returning in the future.

As a birthday present, I finally got to go to Yamato, a place I've been wanting to go for a long time. It was my first time since the renovation. We were told that we could only make a reservation for 4:00 PM, so it was a very early dinner. It was a 2-hour time limit. The crab hot pot was amazing, of course! I also ordered crab miso as a side dish. Because of the 2-hour time limit, I quickly devoured the crab. It was a silent meal (lol). I didn't even have time to enjoy my beer slowly. I wish I could have savored it a little more.

I have been going to this restaurant for about 30 years, but I hadn't been since last year due to the COVID-19 self-restraint. I went back after a long time and was disappointed. The building had been renovated, so I expected it to still be thriving, but the crab tasted different. It was really disappointing. The meat was sparse. The sashimi was not crab, just regular fish. The grilled crab was overcooked, the meat was small, and I was hoping for the taste from the past, so it was really disappointing. The porridge at the end of the hot pot had no crab flavor at all. It was like plain hot water porridge. In the past, the crab broth would simmer down to a yellowish broth where you would add rice, and it was really delicious. But today's was completely different. Also, during the porridge, I was served with a dirty ladle that had not been replaced. The service had also deteriorated in various ways. I was disappointed in everything. I will never go back again. If they continue like this, I think customers will start to stay away.

I haven't been to "Yamato" in my hometown for about 10 years now. I first went there about 25 years ago, so I guess the store has been renovated. When it comes to long-established udon in Yao, it's Kagado. When it comes to blowfish and crab, it's "Yamato." There used to be a lot of private rooms, and I used to go there like a normal izakaya (surprisingly reasonable, I think). Some say it was delicious in the past, but has the taste declined? In recent years, whenever I return to my hometown, I only go to Manje, I guess.

Kaninoyamato was like a beautiful presence. I grew up hearing that stepping into such a high-class restaurant would make you melt instantly, so I stubbornly believed it. I even told my partner to pick up my bones if I melted as soon as I entered. Thankfully, I didn't melt (laughs). The appetizers were important. You can tell a lot about a restaurant from them. I ordered the kanichiri course and even got a filling porridge. I also ordered grilled crab and crab sashimi (a bit crunchy) separately. I thoroughly enjoyed the crab. It's fun to struggle with it. The conversation didn't flow, but that's normal for us. It's a bit sad. The price was surprisingly cheap. If you can eat crab like this, it's worth it. I also ordered crab battera and futomaki as souvenirs, drank a lot, and it came out to about 20,000 yen. If you're eating freshly caught crab at a fisherman's inn, it's a different story, but otherwise, this is good.
