TINTIN@呑んだ暮れ
I became a new uncle when my first grandchild was born in September. Right after becoming a grandfather, I received a gift for Respect for the Aged Day. It was a set of cream buns from Yagendo, a Hiroshima-based bakery known for its cream buns. My wife, who is also a new grandmother, and I enjoyed them together!
Yagendo, originally a traditional Japanese confectionery shop, was founded in 1933 in Minato-cho, Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. In the 1960s during the period of rapid economic growth, the second generation of the family started making Western-style pastries. The third generation, who had trained at a German bread shop in Kobe, also ventured into making bread, eventually expanding to 10 stores in Hiroshima Prefecture. The fusion of the founder's "Japanese" roots and the second generation's "Western" influence led to the creation of the cream bun.
Today, Yagendo has 20 stores in the Kanto to southern regions of Japan, as well as branches in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Canada.
Cream Buns: Yagendo's cream buns are made with a focus on the "melting texture" and are created with a commitment to the natural, original flavors. They are made with a gentle cream that is soft, moist, and fluffy. The cream has just the right amount of sweetness, bringing smiles to both adults and children, creating a naturally gentle feeling. That is the essence of Yagendo's cream buns.
- Carp Cream Bun (Custard): A simple custard cream bun featuring Hiroshima Toyo Carp's official character, Carp Boy. The custard cream is light and plain, combined with carefully selected fresh cream.
- Kokura Cream Bun (Red Bean): A cream bun with a rich flavor of Kokura red beans, cooked carefully and slowly. It has a nostalgic and gentle taste, earning praise for its unique flavor.
- Amaou Strawberry Cream Bun: A juicy sweet bun filled with plenty of "Amaou" strawberries from Fukuoka Prefecture. The fresh jam made with Amaou strawberries blends perfectly with Yagendo's creamy and soft sweetness.
- Custard Cream Bun: A simple custard cream bun with carefully selected fresh cream, creating a plain yet delicious cream bun.
- Setouchi Lemon Cream Bun: Yagendo's signature cream is infused with the flavor of "Setouchi lemons." The sweet and sour fruit jam combined with the smooth cream bun creates a refreshing harmony. Enjoy the delightful combination of flavors.
