Okonomiyaki... My family had never been to an okonomiyaki restaurant before. Okonomiyaki was not a part of our culture at home. The first time I cooked it myself was when I was in junior high school, right after I entered. There was a new restaurant near my school, and I used to go there. The owner's wife was beautiful. It could get a bit rowdy with all the yankees hanging out there, but it was a fun place. I felt proud when I could cook okonomiyaki well. As I grew older, I had fewer opportunities to go, but recently, my daughter said she wanted to try okonomiyaki, and that made me want to eat it again. So, we decided to go to "Dohtonbori." There used to be a local okonomiyaki restaurant called "Dondon-tei" near my place, but it closed down, so this big restaurant is the only one left. Personally, I preferred this place, so I'm glad it's still here. We arrived just before 8 pm. It was a bit late for dinner for us, but the parking lot was almost full! The restaurant was bustling with customers. I don't remember this place being so crowded. We were seated at a table towards the back and checked the menu. There were many options, but we ordered the "Mochi Cheese" (810 yen) and the "Otokudama" (540 yen) okonomiyaki. Even though they are both okonomiyaki, the cabbage in Otokudama is shredded, while in Mochi Cheese, it is finely chopped, creating a different texture in the finished dish. Both were delicious. Mochi Cheese lived up to its name with mochi and cheese inside. They worked surprisingly well together. It disappeared in an instant. Otokudama was really worth it. For just one coin before tax, you could enjoy a satisfying okonomiyaki. It was perfect for my daughter who doesn't like too many toppings. I quietly enjoyed the "Hiroshima-yaki" (961 yen) by myself. The batter, cabbage, meat, condiments, egg, and yakisoba noodles made it quite complex. The instructions on how to cook it were clearly explained, so I followed them diligently. It turned out cleaner than I expected, and I felt proud of myself. As I praised myself, my daughters immediately wanted to try it, but they also said, "The yakisoba is crispy and delicious!" It made me happy to hear that. It was really delicious. I'm sure I'll do even better next time! But it only happens when you least expect it. (laughs) My wife, who said she wouldn't eat much, also ate well and looked satisfied. My daughters said, "We're so full, it hurts!" They usually don't eat much, but they had fun flipping it on the hot plate, pouring sauce and mayo... It was entertaining for them. But, of course, having fun also takes time. It became a very late dinner for us, which is unusual. Well, it's a holiday weekend, so let's just enjoy it. We'll come back on a day when we have more time.
