Founded in 1901, "Hokkaido Kitaichi Glass Co., Ltd." is a company located in Otaru City, Hokkaido. Known for establishing the image of Otaru as a glass town, the company offers various products in its glass shop, as well as operates liquor and wine shops, food and cafes, and even allows visitors to tour workshops and art galleries, and experience making glass beads and glass carvings. During a visit to the company's third building terrace, I tried their famous "8-tier soft serve ice cream." Otaru is a competitive sweets area with various famous shops, and amidst the trendy sweets, I wanted to try something a bit different, which led me to try this unique soft serve that caught my attention in a guidebook. The shop was quiet when I visited on a Sunday around 5:30 pm, with only one other customer present. The menu featured a variety of soft serve ice creams, with the highlight being the 8-tier soft serve priced at 630 yen (tax included). The flavors in the 8 tiers included milk & chocolate, melon & strawberry, chocolate, milk, melon, strawberry, matcha, and ramune. The ice cream started melting from the moment it was served, but the individual flavors were enjoyable. The milk soft serve was rich and delicious, while the chocolate was tasty and the melon had a nice flavor. However, the matcha and ramune flavors got a bit lost towards the end, and by then, the mixture of flavors was a bit overwhelming. Overall, trying this unique soft serve was a good experience, and I'm glad I got to taste it.
