The day before, I saw a news report about the "88th Night" and it made me crave tea sweets, so I decided to visit Yame, one of the leading tea-producing areas in Western Japan. There are many tea shops along the main roads in Yame city, and they all have banners for new tea. I found a shop about 3 km from Yame Interchange that caught my eye when I searched on Tabelog, and I decided to visit just by seeing the name of the shop. The showcase was filled with matcha cream puffs, matcha pudding, and even baked goods like matcha baumkuchen and matcha pound cake. Almost all the products in the store were tea sweets, just like I was looking for. I couldn't help but smile at finding the perfect shop for what I wanted. All the products in the store are made using Yame tea. I was so happy that I ended up buying too much: Tsukishu (126 yen), Tsukishu pudding (126 yen), Natsume 5 pieces (315 yen), Hoshiakari Saisai (126 yen), Hidamari Saisai (126 yen), Yame tea baumkuchen (1,260 yen). Tsukishu: The choux pastry covered with cookie dough has a thin and crispy texture. The cream inside is, of course, matcha cream. It has a strong matcha flavor while being moderately sweet, and the amount of cream is generous. The price is reasonable too. Tsukishu pudding: Matcha pudding with a hint of matcha flavor at the bottom and sweet red bean sauce. The smooth and moist pudding has a gentle texture and is not too sweet. The red bean sauce adds just the right touch. This is a bargain at 126 yen. I should have bought another one. Natsume: A confection named after the shop. A buttery scent like Hakata Torimon with a thin crust filled with dense matcha bean paste. The matcha bean paste, which is slightly bitter and sweet, gives a distinctive tea flavor to the sweet. I like this one. Hoshiakari Saisai: A marble cake with matcha and candied chestnuts. The vivid green matcha is plentiful, and the matcha flavor is strong, complemented by the cut candied chestnuts. It goes well with the moist pound cake dough. Hidamari Saisai: A pound cake with sencha and adzuki beans. The sencha flavor is a bit weak, and the adzuki beans are small and only 4 pieces, lacking the expected sweetness. The sencha and adzuki beans are somewhat lacking in flavor. Yame Tea Baumkuchen: A rich matcha-flavored baumkuchen. The sweetness and matcha aroma are very strong, and one piece is satisfying with its robust flavor. Matcha lovers will be delighted. I enjoyed them slowly over about 3 days. By the way, it was a very hot day, and I was thinking of having cold tea sweets, but it seems that no tea shops in Yame sell matcha soft serve or green tea. Maybe it's considered unconventional for traditional tea shops. I like them though.
