My wife, who knows I love Kouign-amann, bought a box of Kouign-amann from a souvenir shop in Hakata called "Ronpouan". Apparently, this shop is originally from Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City, known for their bread and cakes. The Kouign-amann she bought was small, about 6.5cm in diameter and 2-3cm thick. They were placed with the caramelized side up. There were three flavors: plain, nut-filled, and burnt caramel (exact names unknown). Each piece cost around 200 yen.
I tried the plain one first. The texture was crispy like a pie crust, not too sweet, and lacked butter flavor. The only enjoyment came from the caramelized side, which was also weak. I finished it quickly due to its small size. The second one was burnt caramel, with a dark caramelized side. I expected a nice nutty flavor, but it was disappointing. The weak caramelized side was even weaker due to being burnt, almost non-existent.
The third one was nut-filled, possibly with crushed walnuts. The crushed nuts were scattered in the pastry, but that was it. Overall, these Kouign-amann were far from satisfying. When I asked my wife if they were really Kouign-amann, she confirmed. These were the worst Kouign-amann I've ever had, with minimal size, butter, and sugar. It's like they were trying to mimic the authentic ones, but failed. I prefer the Japanese version of Kouign-amann. I would recommend trying the Kouign-amann from a convenience store like 7-Eleven for comparison. One more critique: the box contained 6 pieces, 2 of each flavor, but the box size was small, causing the pieces to be stacked on top of each other. Not a good presentation from a department store shop.
