Today is Sunday. After relaxing at a cafe, I will head north on my bicycle. I have a vaccine appointment at the Self-Defense Forces in Kitahama today. While looking for a vacant shop, I make a detour from Awaza to Yodoyabashi and head east. Being in the heart of Osaka, not many shops are open on Sundays. However, I spot a few waiting customers at Hokkyokusei Kitahama store. The old Western-style building blending into the Kitahama scenery has a nice atmosphere. I line up behind a lovely family. After about 10 minutes, I am seated at a counter-like table in the back right corner. Now, let's take a look at the menu. The lunch options include service lunch, beef stroganoff omelette rice, salad omelette rice, hamburger with white sauce, and petit omelette rice set. The grand menu features special selections like beef steak and beef stew, as well as classic dishes such as hamburger and beef cutlet. Other items include omelette rice, curry, hashed beef rice, and Kanazawa's specialty Hanton rice. The specialties include chicken karaage, ham salad, and potato fries. I decide to go for the service lunch on weekends and holidays. After a while, my set meal arrives. The main plate, rice plate, and cup of soup are served simultaneously. Personally, when it comes to casual Western dishes, I prefer to enjoy the soup like miso soup as a carb accompaniment until the end. It's nice that they bring everything out at once. Now, on the main plate, there's a hamburger in the front left and two medium-sized shrimp fry on the right. The salad is mainly lettuce, and the side dish is macaroni salad. The soup seems to be consomme soup with bacon pieces floating on top. Let's dig in. First, I enjoy the salad and then move on to the hamburger. It's generously topped with demi-glace sauce. The coarsely ground meat has a rich flavor when chewed. Next, I try the shrimp fry with tartar sauce. Oh, this is delicious! The perfect balance of good oil and the unique umami of shrimp makes it a fantastic dish. The size is not too big, and I can finish it in two bites. The rice is moist and well-steamed. The soup is just right in terms of flavor. Moving on, the macaroni salad complements the meal well. It's a versatile side dish. I continue to enjoy the meal by mixing and matching the flavors. The attentive service, such as providing ice-free water after noticing my medication bag, and handling a complaint from an elderly man with sincerity, adds to the experience. The retro appearance of the restaurant, known for being the birthplace of omurice, is a unique characteristic. Every time I go, I promise myself to order something other than omurice next time, but I always end up ordering omurice again, haha. This time, I intended to order the chicken steak lunch special, but somehow ended up ordering the omurice set with crab cream croquette. The omurice was delicious as always, and the crab cream croquette was a bit small but tasty. Okay, next time I will definitely order something other than omurice! ...Probably will end up ordering omurice again next time, haha.

On Tuesday, I went on a business trip to Osaka with 4 colleagues and we arrived around 11:30. The restaurant had 2 other groups of customers and was not crowded. I went to Hokusei based on a friend's recommendation!!!!!!! I was torn between ordering the omurice and the daily special, but ended up choosing the daily special. The hamburger was juicy and went well with the rice. My friend ordered the omurice, and you can choose between mushrooms or chicken as the filling!

The daily special trio lunch is so good that even if you prefer omelette rice, you might end up ordering the daily special. I was expecting a teriyaki-style chicken, but to my surprise, it was crispy fried chicken with a tasty spicy sauce. The shrimp fry was full of shrimp and the tartar sauce was creamy and easy to eat. Although the fish fry was a bit small and elegant, it was still delicious. For only 900 yen, you get three dishes in the daily special lunch set, making it a great deal for a quick lunch break. Most people were eating the omelette rice set, but I highly recommend trying the daily special lunch at Hokkyokusei for a change.

I ordered the Hanton Rice for 1450 yen. Sorry for the wait. The miso soup was unique. There were shrimp fry, white fish fry, and omelette rice. The amount of shrimp tartar was amazing. The shrimp was crunchy and had a good texture. The fish fry was average, but it was refreshing with the pickled ginger served on the side. I heard that Kitahama shop specializes in curry, so I visited, but it was too crowded with tourists on Saturday afternoon so I had to give up. I visited on a weekday after work. There were only a few customers, so my friend and I were seated at a table with a sofa. The exterior looks old and retro, but the inside is clean and tidy as it has recently opened. I ordered curry rice with a mini salad for 1,000 yen. The curry had a lingering spiciness and was well seasoned, but not too spicy and was delicious. It made me crave for pickled shallots for some reason. I also tried a bite of the beef stroganoff omelette rice that my friend ordered, and it had a nice red wine flavor. (The rice inside was not ketchup.) Kitahama is filled with bars at night, so for those who don't drink, dinner options are limited to places like Yoshinoya or Mos Burger. The exterior is covered in ivy that was split from a plant gifted by the previous owner, Aoyama Kiichi, from Koshien, creating a unique and charming sight in the middle of the city. The interior maintains a retro atmosphere from the Taisho era, making it a lovely dining experience.
