Located directly below Kintetsu Osaka Abenobashi Station and very close to Tennoji Station on various lines, this famous Nagoya-style miso katsu restaurant opened on April 24, 2019, in the food sales area on the basement 2nd floor of the Abeno Harukas Kintetsu Main Store Wing. Yabaton, mainly based in Nagoya, has multiple stores mainly in Nagoya, but also has branches in Tokyo, Sendai, Toyama, and even Bangkok. In Kansai, after debuting in Dotonbori's Osaka Shochikuza basement in June 2016, they expanded to Hankyu Sanbangai in Umeda, and now to Abeno. The store has the kitchen in the back, with the left side being an eat-in counter and the right side being a take-out showcase, with only 6 seats at the counter. The menu includes the famous Waraji Tonkatsu set meal (1,731 yen), as well as the Roast Tonkatsu set meal (1,201 yen), Fillet Tonkatsu set meal (1,731 yen), and skewered katsu, all priced over 1,000 yen, which is quite bold. The recommended limited 10 servings of the "Iron Plate Tonkatsu set meal" is priced at 1,841 yen, even more boldly. It takes courage to offer these prices in a department store eatery. Since it was my first experience with Yabaton, I hesitated on what to order, but I chose the safe option of the Miso Katsu Don set meal (1,301 yen), which was served after about 5 minutes. The tray included the Miso Katsu Don, miso soup, pickles, and a generous amount of shredded cabbage. The Miso Katsu Don has a large piece of pork cutlet on top of rice covered in miso sauce, with additional miso sauce on top. The pork cutlet is crispy and thick, providing a satisfying bite. It has a good amount of fat which enhances the sweetness of the meat. The miso sauce is different from the typical dark, thick sauce I'm familiar with for miso katsu, as it is brown and light. This allows it to be mixed with the rice. It has a unique sweetness and bitterness from soybean miso, but it doesn't overpower, instead enhancing the flavor of the meat. This makes it easy to eat even for those not from Nagoya. The cabbage is served with a dressing made with shiso leaves at the counter, which helps prevent the dish from feeling heavy despite the fatty meat. With the dressing, sesame seeds, shichimi, and mustard available, you can easily change the flavor. The combination of miso sauce and mustard is particularly outstanding. The miso katsu from the popular Nagoya restaurant Yabaton is of high quality and taste. However, the downside may be the price. After all, the Abeno-Tennoji area is a stronghold of KYK. It might be a tough battle in the tonkatsu competition.
