After taking a break with some coffee, I came to Dazaifu to look for souvenirs. I remembered a local commercial I had seen a few times, "Dazaifu~♪ Etoya's~ Ume no Mi Hijiki~♪" but I had never tried it before. The shop was a small house set back a bit from the bustling approach. Their specialty, "Ume no Mi Hijiki," is a side dish for rice. It's even trademarked, and I found out it has many fans nationwide who enjoy ordering it. Now they have expanded their lineup to include Yamasanshojako Hijiki, Shiosaig Hijiki, Satsuma no Katsuo Hijiki, Ume no Mi Wakame, and Karashi Takana Hijiki, all available for tasting in the store. In addition to these, they have mentaiko, original dashi, soup, tea, and other products to accompany rice. However, the best-selling item is still the main dish, "Ume no Mi Hijiki." For dinner, I immediately poured a generous amount over white rice... (it's also good mixed in with the rice). The carefully selected thick-cut hijiki, crunchy ume no mi, and sesame seeds, all finished with a unique method, have a refreshing flavor. Rich in minerals, with a chewy texture from the thick-cut hijiki and a crispy bite from the ume no mi, the balance is excellent. The acidity from the plum is not overpowering, making it suitable even for children to eat! The wrapping paper is also made of chiyogami, which makes it a perfect little souvenir.
