I am taking a late summer vacation and enjoying a trip by car from Fukuoka to Karatsu in Saga. Tonight's dinner was at a famous udon chain restaurant called Siz-san Udon. It's located right next to the hotel where I'm staying and it's open 24 hours, which is amazing! In Fukuoka, besides Siz-san Udon, there are also other famous udon chains like Maki no Udon and West, each with their own unique noodle characteristics. The noodles at Siz-san Udon are thin and slightly chewy with a good texture. This time, I had the most popular dish, the meat and burdock tempura udon with a side of oden. The burdock tempura was square and came in 5 pieces, making for a visually appealing dish. It was topped with sweetly simmered beef. Now, let's have a topping party with the tempura flakes and shredded seaweed on the table! To be honest, the taste was neither good nor bad, but "it's good enough." Thank you for the meal.

It's been a while since I had udon at Sushi-san. When I saw the sign at the entrance, I felt like having anago (conger eel). It's just before 2 o'clock, past the lunch rush, but the restaurant is quite busy. I was seated at the counter and quickly decided to order the anago ten-zaru udon (930 yen). I heard that due to the pandemic, the tempura and kelp are individually packaged now, but here it was the same as before. I wonder if other branches have individual packaging? After a short wait, my order arrived. Oh, there's more udon than I expected. This is my first time having cold udon at Sushi-san. It's delicious, but as someone born in Kagawa Prefecture, it's a bit subtle for me. But I guess it's just a matter of preference. (I love the warm Niku-Gobo Ten Udon here!) And the anago! It's bigger than I expected, over 30cm! The tempura coating is thick, but hot and crispy, very tasty. The portion of udon and tempura is too much, so I couldn't have dessert today. I'll visit again, thank you for the meal.

Now, let's talk about Suke-san Udon. It is a famous udon chain in Fukuoka, and Suke-san is how it's pronounced. I decided to try it for the first time. The store's appearance and interior are like a family restaurant. What's impressive is that they are open 24 hours. I sat at the counter seat facing each other. I ordered Kashiwa Udon for 620 yen, Tempura for 500 yen, and a bottle of beer for 580 yen. The menu mainly focuses on udon, but they also have soba and rice dishes, giving it a feel of a Japanese-style family restaurant. The udon came out quickly, it was white and soft, with a nice aroma of broth. What's interesting is that the softness of this udon is not unpleasant. The tempura included squid, white fish, shrimp, pumpkin, and green pepper. The beer was Asahi Red Star. It was nice to have unlimited servings of grated yam and fried tempura bits on the table. The grated yam had a nice aroma and went well with the clear broth. Putting grated yam on udon or soba is a custom not found in the Kanto region, but common in the Kansai region, so it seems to be popular west of Kansai. The customers were diverse, including solo men, solo women, groups of women, groups of men, and families. Surprisingly, many people ordered soba when I listened to other people's orders. Towards the end, the sweetness of the broth started to bother me. The difference in preferences around this area seems to be influenced by the East-West divide. It might be difficult to open a store in the Kanto region in this same format. Thank you for the meal.

The other day, I saw an interesting flag as I passed by, so I came to check it out today. It's been a while since I visited Sisanda Udon, a popular restaurant. Despite avoiding the lunch rush, I arrived around 2 pm and the place was still busy with customers. When I sat down and looked at the menu, I found it! A limited quantity, Sisanda Happiness Set, which includes popular menu items in mini sizes. It's like a dream come true to enjoy dishes like Niku Gobo Tempura Udon, Katsudon, and Ohagi all at once! I was delighted as I like to try a variety of dishes. The fact that you can choose the Ohagi topping is also a nice touch. Although it's a limited quantity set, they still had some left, so I ordered the set with Ohagi (880 yen). I was curious about the actual size of the dishes, even though they were described as mini sizes. After a short wait, the dishes arrived. Oh, the bowls are bigger than I thought. Is it the same size as the mini udon side menu? The noodles are about half a portion, but there are plenty of toppings, which is just right. The Katsudon is probably a half-size, served in a large rice bowl, and it's more generous than I expected. Usually, I don't order Katsudon because it's too much, but it tastes delicious after a long time. These two dishes alone are quite filling. And then, the Ohagi! The size is just perfect! It's a bit bigger than a Yukimi Daifuku ice cream, maybe? But it's enough for a slightly sweet dessert that satisfies my little craving. When I come to Sisanda, I always end with Ohagi, but the regular size is too big for me after a meal, so I always end up with a full stomach, haha. Oh, I used a child's fork for the Ohagi. It goes well with hot tea (self-service). Yes, it's delicious again today. I really like the mini size series. As the name suggests, it's truly a set that makes you happy. If I could be more indulgent, I would love it if they had mini sizes for all menu items. Mini Tendon, Mini Curry Udon, the combination possibilities are endless. To the important people at Sisanda Udon! Please make it happen! I'll visit again, thank you for the meal.

During my second visit to Fukuoka this year, I decided to try out Sukiya Udon for the first time, after having already been to Marugame Udon. With this visit, I have now conquered the top three udon chains in Fukuoka. I ordered the most popular dish, the Niku Gobo Tempura Udon. The broth had a gentle flavor, and the udon noodles were soft as expected. The tempura was crispy and about 15 centimeters long. The meat was not too sweet and mixed well with the broth. In addition to tempura crumbs, they also offered free shredded tororo konbu to add to your udon. I added some halfway through. Thank you for the meal.

It seems like a famous udon chain in Fukuoka. I often see it, so I was curious. In Fukuoka, udon with tempura on top is popular, so I ordered that. The udon itself was good, and I was pleasantly surprised at how cheap it was even with the tempura on top!

While avoiding eating out due to the coronavirus for a while, I switched from Baby Face to Sannoudon. The Beef and Chicken Tempura Donburi with Mini Udon for 990 yen (tax included) plus an additional 120 yen (tax included) for Gobo Tempura. The menu doesn't mention that the Chicken Tempura Donburi comes with a raw egg topping, but it does have it. Personally, I don't mind it too much, but I wonder about it. The beef is a bit too sweet and the broth is too heavy. The chicken tempura is light. The 5 pieces of Gobo Tempura for 120 yen are tasty, cheap, and appreciated. The Beef Cutlet Donburi with Mini Udon for 1020 yen (tax included). The cutlet is delicious, but the beef seems to be a bit overpowering. The udon is small, but the broth and noodles are tasty. I usually always go for the motsunabe udon, but I couldn't resist the limited-time offer, so I decided to try something different this time. I shared the chicken tempura and cutlet with my partner and ordered the 3-kind mixed rice bowl. Among them, the cutlet is definitely the best. Maybe because of the beef, it ends up being too broth-heavy, which I personally don't like. This time, I tried something interesting, but next time, I think I'll stick to just the cutlet donburi.

I'm glad that the late-night opening has resumed. Around 2 am, there were about three groups of people, which was unexpected. However, they were sold out of burdock tempura, so I had to settle for shrimp tempura, which was a bit moist on the inside. Well, I guess that's the quality you can expect.

This morning, while watching TV, I found out that today is Yakisoba Day. So for a late lunch, I'm the type who actively eats event foods, haha. I had been recommended this yakisoba before but never had the chance to try it. Finally, I came to eat it today. I'm from Kagawa, the udon prefecture, but surprisingly, I've only had yakisoba a few times in my life. Probably because udon restaurants in Kagawa don't have yakisoba on the menu. I know the name, but it's not familiar to me. I make yakisoba at home, but I've never tried making yakisoba. I heard that yakisoba in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, is famous, but in Fukuoka, I've been eating only gobou tempura udon, haha. After ordering and waiting for a while, it arrived on the hot plate, sizzling. The sound of sizzling really stimulates the appetite, haha. I wanted to break the egg yolk on top of the udon, but it didn't go well because it stuck to the hot plate and my lack of skill, unfortunately! Next time, I'll try again. The yakisoba was delicious with lots of ingredients. Thank you for the recommendation! It was more filling than I expected, so I couldn't order the dessert ohagi, haha. My family requested to eat something that can only be found in Fukuoka, so we went to Sizan Udon during our visit. Although there are many branches, this was our first time here. There were many menu options, but we decided to try the seasonal limited edition Hamo Udon. Yes, we can't resist limited edition items. My family ordered the classic Meat and Burdock Tempura Udon that Sizan is known for. It was a lively atmosphere during lunchtime at the restaurant. The Hamo Udon I ordered was refreshing and delicious. My family also thoroughly enjoyed their Meat and Burdock Tempura Udon. We had a delicious lunch and even received a prize from the Sizan lottery. I had heard that Fukuoka's soul food is not ramen, so I was planning to eat udon before heading home. However, a friend told me that Zensan Udon was nearby and recommended that I try it before leaving. I ordered the Maruten Udon. It didn't have much firmness, haha. I like Sanuki Udon, but Fukuoka's udon also has a good flavor with bonito broth and topped with green onions, with a slightly soft texture that is nice. Delicious♪ The tempura also had a similar texture. I finished every last drop of the broth. Thank you for the meal.

Suzu-san Udon, a 24-hour restaurant located along the middle road of Shiraoi, is where I had lunch before visiting Fukutsu City. Suzu-san Udon has a variety of menu options, but I chose my favorite, tempura udon. The dish cost 1000 yen and came with crispy tempura on the side. After I moved here, this shop opened. I often rely on it when work runs late. I often eat the burdock tempura udon and katsu curry udon. The oden is also delicious with rich flavors. I will continue to rely on this place in the future.

At midnight, there were 7 groups of customers, which was surprising. It was so crowded that I felt like it should be featured on a 72-hour documentary. I expected the service to be slow due to the high number of customers. However, even though I ordered a large portion, the amount was not as expected. When I asked the staff to confirm with the kitchen, they said it was a large portion without even checking. Interestingly, my friend's regular portion of udon was actually larger. Also, when I ordered mochi, it was noticeably smaller than before. I suspect it may be due to dining in, as the mochi in the takeaway pack was clearly larger. I will avoid ordering mochi in the restaurant from now on.

The tonkatsu at Fukunoyu was too rich in flavor and difficult to chew, so it was just okay. I would like to try the Happiness Set at a different branch.

Zushiawase set, the most popular menu, includes Niku-koboten udon, Katsu-toji don, and Botamochi. The udon has a delicious broth infused with the flavor of the meat, making it incredibly tasty. The Katsu don is also delicious with a flavorful broth. My favorite udon restaurant.
