On this day, I was craving hormones for some reason, so I went to Hanako, which is conveniently located near my workplace. I arrived at the restaurant just 10 minutes before they stopped taking orders. The friendly mother warmly welcomed me, creating a nice atmosphere that raised my expectations. I ordered hormones, green onion fish cake, beef heart, skirt steak, and pig's feet. The hormones had a strong hormone smell, which might be irresistible to those who like it, but I found the smell a bit off-putting. The green onion fish cake tasted exactly as I expected, like the ones you can buy at the supermarket for around 48 yen, with freeze-dried white onions. The first bite of the beef heart was delicious, but it didn't leave a lasting impression. The skirt steak didn't stand out much. I was happy that the pig's feet were grilled. If there had been ponzu sauce on the table, I would have enjoyed them even more. The atmosphere and the friendly mother were the best parts of the restaurant. Although I had some dissatisfaction with the taste, the fact that we each ordered two glasses of draft beer and still got change from 2000 yen made it worth it. If I ever crave hormones again, I will definitely come back. Thank you for the meal.

"HANAKO Grilled Hormone Iron Plate Stand" is a standing grilled hormone shop located about a 7-minute walk west of Kishinosato Station on the Osaka Metro Yotsubashi Line along Naniwa-Suji. After craving hormone from the hormone ramen the other day, I decided to go and try their grilled hormone this time. The hormone ramen was delicious, so I was excited to try the grilled hormone at this place. The shop is located in the Sennichimae shopping street, just across from Bic Camera towards Dotonbori. The menu is extensive, but I decided to stick to my original plan and ordered the grilled hormone. The atmosphere was quiet and I enjoyed the meal in peace. The grilled hormone and drinks were reasonably priced, and the hormone was tender and flavorful without any strong odor. The sauce was soy-based, and the combination of hormone and fat on the plate was delicious. The fat melted in the mouth, and the hormone had a nice bounce to it. I also tried the lung part, which was tender and had a light flavor. Overall, it was a satisfying and enjoyable lunch experience.

I went to Stand HANAKO, located a 15-minute walk from Kishinosato Station in Nishinari Ward, Osaka. I had been passing by the front of the shop for a while, but finally mustered up the courage to go in. I ordered the Hormone Yaki (grilled offal) and Kasu Udon. The shop only has a counter for standing room. The Hormone Yaki is grilled in advance, so it comes out quickly. The Kasu Udon has a light broth. It is a bit rich with plenty of oil residue, but still light. Thank you for the meal!

I revisited the "Hormone Teppanyaki Stand Hanako" at Nishitenka Tea House. They offer take-out hormone stir-fry as well as dine-in options. The menu includes various beef hormone dishes from tongue to heart, as well as pork hormone dishes like liver, fat, and hormone grill. The "fat" is a common menu item at hormone shops in this area, which is the fat around the intestines. When boiled, it looks like a chrysanthemum flower, so some shops label it as "Chrysanthemum Fat". Enjoying the fat with black oolong tea is also a fun experience. I drink a highball. The hormone grill is reasonably priced at 200 yen for 100g. They start cooking it on the teppan as soon as you order, including various parts like intestines and lungs. On Saturday, I went bar hopping in the downtown area of Osaka called "Nishinari". After leaving the first place, "Gyoza Kentaro", I chose the second place for this time, a standing bar specializing in horumon (offal) and teppanyaki called "Stand Hanako".
About the restaurant:
The restaurant is located in front of Nishitenkachaya Station on the Nankai Shiomibashi Line. The building of the restaurant is very long sideways but extremely thin in thickness. Maybe the point is that they can operate even when it rains because they have a roof and walls. And there is a female staff member who seems to be Hanako running the place alone.
About the dishes:
I ordered the signature dish, horumon, and some other dishes to try. The dishes I had that day were like this:
- Horumon Yaki: Various parts of horumon grilled on a teppan. It is served quickly as it is just transferred from the teppan to the plate. It has a chewy and juicy texture with a sweet and garlicky flavor, perfect for pairing with alcohol.
- Gyumotsu Nitsuke: A simmered dish of beef offal. It took about 5 minutes from ordering to serving. The beef offal was tender with a nice bounce and rich in fat, giving it a sweet taste.
- Nitamago: A boiled egg priced at 50 yen. The yolk was well-cooked, similar to the eggs in oden. It tasted quite ordinary, but considering the price, it was not an issue.
At the end, the payment was done through a "pay as you go" system, but I was able to pay in one sum at the end. The total bill for the day, including drinks like draft beer, highball, and a special shochu cocktail, came to 1580 yen. Overall, it was quite affordable for a standing horumon bar in Nishinari. It was a satisfying experience. Thank you for the meal!

In Nishinari, there are many places that grill horumon on a hot plate like this. One place that has become famous is "Yamaki", but it's a bit intimidating to go there for the first time, so I looked for another place. Although the location is different, I tried standing at a place run by a woman named Hanako, who was featured in a YouTube video by Aah. The red awning in front of the shop is directly hit by sunlight, making the shop look like it's under stage lighting in a comedy skit, but don't worry about that. They offer rare cuts of meat that I haven't heard of before, and you can eat them for only 200 yen. I ordered the classic horumon yaki and a half-size pig's foot, but I regretted it when only one whole pig's foot was served. Despite having eaten pig's foot before, I was a bit nervous because it was served with just salt. The meat was too fatty and collagen-rich, making it hard to eat with just salt. I couldn't finish it, so the owner asked if I wanted to take it home, but I don't live nearby. I wondered if locals use it to make ramen broth at home. The horumon yaki, with my favorite fluffy lung included, was just right with its well-balanced sauce, perfect for drinking alcohol. I wanted to drink a bit more, but I was sweating like Niagara Falls, and the temperature was close to 40 degrees Celsius. It was unbearable, so I couldn't stay any longer. The owner, who was grilling pig's foot in the heat, is truly amazing. I'm sorry for leaving some food behind.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon. Only one customer before me. It was a cold day, but the vinyl curtains blocked the wind. Ordered a draft beer, hormone yakitori (200 yen), and extra fat (200 yen). Feeling peckish, I decided to try the challenge of a large portion meal at the local Chinese restaurant, Tenkachaya, which I had been stood up at before due to temporary closure. I ordered the fried chicken set meal, which turned out to be even larger than I had imagined. Overwhelmed by the portion size, I surrendered and took two pieces of fried chicken to go, reminiscent of KFC. My stomach had just enough room to handle the meal without feeling too uncomfortable. Now, what to do next? I thought about grabbing a cup of tea at a cafe I had visited before, but with plenty of time on my hands, I decided to explore other establishments. I headed towards Tsunomori and stumbled upon a bright red facade along the main street. Curious, I approached and discovered a shop covered in vinyl with a grill cooking hormone in the back. It seemed to be a standing bar specializing in hormone dishes. Although I wasn't in the mood for a drink so early in the day, I remembered hearing about this place from an acquaintance and decided to have just one drink. The eye-catching bright red facade along the street made the place stand out. Despite it being midday, the shop was almost full. The sight of the mama-san's daughter helping out inside was heartwarming. I stood by the grill with a wide space on my right, perusing the menu carefully. The menu featured a variety of hormone dishes at affordable prices ranging from 200 to 500 yen. I ordered a highball (250 yen) and carefully considered my choice of side dish, mindful of my stomach and wallet. After some time, a space opened up on the right side with slightly more room, so I decided to move there. The space had a more relaxed atmosphere with menus posted on the wall and buckets used as ashtrays. I finally settled on trying the simmered dish (280 yen), a favorite of mine that I hadn't been able to find a good version of in the west. I realized for the first time that this was a cash-only establishment and prepared to pay for both the drink and the dish. As I sipped my drink, I listened to the conversations of the couples on either side. When the simmered dish arrived on a small shell-shaped plate, it looked visually appealing and tasted well-cooked with a flavor that complemented the alcohol. It was exactly the taste I had been looking for, different from the sweeter western-style simmered dishes. The variety of hormone meats were tender and not commonly found in the east. Satisfied with my meal, I decided to end my visit there for the day. As I left the restaurant and continued north, I found myself starting to drink in my usual area, and it was almost 10:00 PM by the time I returned to base camp.

The hormone dishes were fresh and not too smelly. The hormone grill came with sauce, while other dishes could be chosen with either sauce or salt. The interior of the restaurant is bright, clean, and completely different from the traditional hormone shops in Nishinari. It has a comfortable atmosphere where even a woman dining alone would feel safe. It's a great place to enjoy some hormone dishes and drinks in a casual setting.

Opposite the Kazumana Hotel, just outside the Kazumana Hotel, a red sign with the words "Teppanyaki Stand" caught my eye! It was a horumon (offal) grill shop across the street. Of course, I had to check it out right away! The shop's name is HANAKO, a standing horumon grill shop that opened in early June, with a beautiful orchid plant welcoming customers. According to the owner, the name of the shop comes from their house cat's name, which is easy to remember and cute. The main dishes are pork horumon, but they also have beef tongue and horumon udon. I ordered a highball for 250 yen, made with self-made strong carbonated water, and it was refreshing and delicious. I also ordered the recommended horumon for 200 yen, my favorite heart for 280 yen, and the rare pork tail for 250 yen. The horumon was cooked on the grill at the shop and was incredibly tasty! The pork tail was tender, flavorful, and very satisfying. The heart dish was also generous and delicious. I definitely want to try other items on the menu next time. The shop is a standing-only establishment, so I didn't have to worry about COVID-19. The location is a bit tricky to find, but I will definitely visit again.
