"Omurice Set (1,080 yen)"
*Includes salad, drink, soup, side dish
First and foremost, the standout feature of this restaurant is the extremely thick, fluffy, and jiggly omelette. It's a half-cooked type that opens up with a cut in the middle, known as the "flower blooming omurice." The flavor is simple, but the amount of egg used is quite substantial, likely more than three eggs. The rice is slightly soft with less moisture, resembling ketchup rice. While the ketchup flavor isn't overpowering, there's a noticeable buttery aroma. The ingredients include ham and onions. The sauce is a thick and rich demi-glace sauce with high viscosity, offering a blend of sweet and bitter flavors akin to chocolate, with occasional hints of acidity. Since the sauce itself has a strong flavor, it complements the relatively mild taste of the omelette and ketchup rice. Especially with the simple taste of the omelette, the rich demi-glace sauce pairs well.
The Omurice Set includes not only the main omurice but also soup, salad, side dish, pickles, and even a drink, all for 1,080 yen, which is truly exceptional value for money. Considering the quality and quantity, this price would be unheard of in Tokyo.
【Summary】
Located near Akasaka Station in Hakata, behind Fukuoka Castle ruins and Fukuoka City Central Gymnasium, is Lion Shokudo. I visited three years ago in 2020 and was impressed by the incredible value for money. On this holiday visit at 11:40, the restaurant was full, with one group waiting outside. The jiggly omurice has gained even more popularity, turning the restaurant into a hot spot. With only one chef and one staff member managing the place, even a short line can result in a one-hour wait, but this time we managed to get in after about 20 minutes. Despite the rising prices, the value for money here remains remarkable. Lunch menus include not just omurice but also curry and polonaise, all with sets priced in the 1,100 yen range. The dinner omurice set with all-you-can-drink option is also affordable at 3,800 yen. Whether you're a local or a traveler, this is a must-visit for the best value omurice in Fukuoka.
