Upon entering the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, I found this shop right away. I quickly bought one Umeboshi mochi. You can pay with PayPay. It was warm, chewy, and delicious. It doesn't crumble like a regular manju, so I thought it might be perfect for hot days or for eating on the go.

I went on a trip around Kyushu with GW and first visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine for sightseeing!! I stumbled upon a food called Umegae mochi at the Nakamise shopping street, which seems to be a specialty of Dazaifu... Feeling hungry, I decided to eat it after finishing my prayers, so I walked to increase my hunger. By the way, this Umegae mochi is said to be derived from an old lady secretly handing mochi on a branch to Sugawara no Michizane... (super abbreviated) With my stomach growling, I decided to give it a try!! It seems that there is sweet bean paste inside the mochi, sandwiched and grilled, and it was slightly warm when handed to me. I quickly moved to a less crowded area and took a bite. The mochi has a slightly crispy texture and tastes good. I thought it would be plum-flavored because of the "plum" in the name, but it's just sweet bean paste. It's not too sweet and just right. I only bought one, so I finished it in no time!! Thank you for the meal.

This is a shop called Kakuda Shouten located at the corner before the second torii gate on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. I visited the shrine and ended my stroll by buying some Ume-gaeshi mochi to take home. The owner was carefully hand-baking the Ume-gaeshi mochi at the storefront. I bought a pack of five Ume-gaeshi mochi to take home, which cost 650 yen. The mochi came with a paper with the store's name, as well as instructions on how to warm them up and the origin of Ume-gaeshi mochi. The mochi got its name from the tradition of offering mochi with a plum branch when Lord Michizane passed away. The shop is located at the corner before the second torii gate along Babasando. Address: 3-2-65 Saifu, Dazaifu City. Phone: 092-922-4059. Opening hours: 9:00-18:00. Closed irregularly (please note). Prices, opening hours, and closing days are subject to change, so please confirm with the store before visiting.

There is a shop at the corner of the intersection on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine where an older lady bakes and serves freshly made treats one by one in molds. The food is delicious, nothing special, but it is soothing to try the local specialty while on a journey.

During my training in Kyushu, I also visited here. Finally, I arrived at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine! The weather is nice, and the food stalls along the approach look dazzling. When you come here, you can't miss this! "Ume-gaeshi mochi"!! Each store calls out to you. I bought some freshly baked ones. Hmm, no matter how many times I eat it, this crispy texture and not too sweet red bean paste are delicious.

I stopped by a shop selling Ume-gaeshi mochi on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Dazaifu City. The place was packed with people at this time of year. The popular shops had long lines, and even the less popular ones had queues forming. I chose a shop where I could get my hands on the mochi quickly, but still had to wait for 10 minutes. Perhaps due to a shortage of baking machines, the line moved slowly. One piece cost 120 yen. The mochi was freshly baked, crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and filled with plenty of sweet bean paste. It was delicious, comparable to the popular Ume-gaeshi mochi. Overall, it was a fantastic Ume-gaeshi mochi. Taste: 34/50, Cost performance: 12/20, Atmosphere: 10/20, Customer service: 5/10. Total: 61/100. Restaurant information: Dazaifu 3-2-6, Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Phone: 092-922-4059.

I strolled around Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and accidentally entered through the back entrance, ending up on the main approach after a while. It was crowded with people. I noticed a Starbucks that looked like it had chopsticks stuck in it. Apparently, it won some design award, but I couldn't really tell. As I walked, I started feeling hungry. There were many shops selling Umegae mochi, with some having long lines. I decided to try a shop that caught my eye. An elderly lady skillfully wrapped red bean paste in mochi using a mold and baked it. I ordered the "Umegae mochi" for ¥120. It was freshly baked just for me, and it was served in a stylish paper wrapping. The shape of a plum was visible in the middle. It was so hot and the red bean paste was like magma... delicious! I may have eaten too much. After that, I walked around the National Museum to burn off some calories. It was a great meal!

This is a shop near the station on the approach to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine that sells Ume-gaeshi mochi. After trying two popular shops with long lines, both of which used a filling machine resulting in thick mochi, I decided to look for a shop where I could enjoy handmade, freshly baked mochi along the approach. I found this shop, where both wrapping the anko in mochi and baking them are done by hand. They use a single mold to bake four pieces at a time, so there may be a bit of a wait, but you can get freshly baked mochi. You can also eat them in the shop. The Ume-gaeshi mochi, with a beautifully shaped plum design, has thin mochi with a crispy and fragrant outer layer, and the sweet red bean paste is just right in sweetness. Ah, this is exactly the Ume-gaeshi mochi I wanted to eat! There isn't a long line outside the shop, but customers are coming one after another to make purchases. It's actually a hidden gem of a shop!
