I stopped by at Shin-Osaka Station when traveling from Osaka to Shiga. Normally, I use the Shinkansen, but on this day, I transferred from the Midosuji Line to the Tokaido Line to go to Omihachiman. Along the way, I went to the restroom and found a sign for Grill Bom at a shop in the concourse of the station. Grill Bom is a Western-style restaurant located in Shinsekai, the hometown of Tsutenkaku Tower. When I was in elementary school, my parents and I used to go there every month. Now, there is also a beef cutlet specialty shop in Higashi-Ginza, and I have tried it, but it has been almost 5 years since I last had it, so I decided to buy it.
- Beef Cutlet Sandwich (Half)
At the Shinsekai and Higashi-Ginza shops, they make it fresh on the spot for takeout, so it is slightly different from pre-made ones. The main difference lies in how the cutlet is fried. Since I didn't know when I would eat it, it was cooked well-done with a strong heat. When you get takeout from the restaurant, they fry it rare. This is because they don't know when it will be purchased, so when selling it in a bento box format at the station, it is understandable. Therefore, I recommend going to Grill Bom directly to buy or eat it for the best taste. Also, the pickles are a must. The sweet and sour taste of small cucumber pickles is essential, but when it's takeout, the vinegar seeps into the bread, so you won't get it unless you eat at the restaurant.
Back in my childhood, there was a strong image in Osaka that "Western food equals high-class cuisine." Therefore, "beef equals high-class ingredient" and "pork equals common ingredient." The meat served in high-class Western restaurants in Osaka was mostly beef. So, the menu at Grill Bom back then also featured only beef for dishes like curry and hashed beef rice, if I remember correctly. Instead of tonkatsu, they served cutlets. In other words, the English translation of French cotelette, "cutlet." Also, in Osaka, fillet was preferred as a high-class ingredient over loin, so when you ordered a cutlet at an authentic Western-style restaurant like Grill Bom, you would get a "fillet cutlet = beef fillet cutlet." As we were heading towards the bubble economy, the economy was good, so we were often taken there to eat. Among the restaurants where my parents took me, the menu at Western-style restaurants was naturally very popular with children. At Grill Bom, I would eat hamburgers, steaks, and bring back a fillet cutlet sandwich as a souvenir. It truly is a taste of memories. Thank you for the meal.
