Today I had plans in Hakata and had lunch near Hakata Station! Lately, all the restaurants near Hakata Station on holidays have long lines of tourists... so I decided to try okonomiyaki, which is not a specialty of Hakata! The restaurant had a counter with 4 seats and about 8 tables... you order through mobile order! I chose the "Nikutama Soba-iri" (940 yen) from the menu! After waiting for about 10 minutes, the okonomiyaki arrived at the counter! It was served hot on a griddle, and I adjusted the flavor with the sauce on the table... The okonomiyaki was thick and fluffy! It had plenty of soba noodles on top and lots of vegetables at the bottom... The cabbage and bean sprouts were crunchy and fresh! In contrast, the soba noodles were chewy and added a nice texture! The combination of these two elements was satisfying... The noodles and vegetables were both generous in portion, and I left the restaurant feeling full and satisfied! It was a comfortable and enjoyable lunch without any lines! Thank you for the meal!

One unique feature here is the head chef, who used to be a sumo wrestler in the Juryo division and weighed 245 kilograms during his active days. You can see pictures of him during his sumo career displayed in the restaurant. The interior has counter seats and tables, with the chef cooking okonomiyaki behind the counter. I ordered the Niku-tama soba for 850 yen including tax, using a QR code on my smartphone to place the order. The noodles were thin and cooked in the Hiroshima style, with a sweet flavor from the Otafuku sauce. It was delicious. I hope to sit at the counter one day and have a chat with the head chef.

They offer a casual drinking set for 1100 yen, which includes beer, two small dishes (potato salad & kimchi), and a half portion of "tonpei-yaki." The definition of tonpei-yaki is a bit unclear, but here they serve it with a fried egg on top of cabbage, covered in pork sauce. The overall concept seems a bit lacking in unity, as each ingredient seems to be eaten separately. It seems like they are currently focusing more on dishes like ikura don (salmon roe rice bowl) rather than okonomiyaki. Ordering can be a bit of a hassle as it is done through a smartphone (some customers even left upon hearing this). There is a significant disconnect between the restaurant's appearance and its actual offerings. It's a bit disappointing, isn't it?

From Hakata Station, 181m underground in Hakata Station, there is an okonomiyaki restaurant that has recently relocated from the basement of Shin-Mitsui Building. In addition to okonomiyaki, they also specialize in rice bowls, such as ikura don. While the okonomiyaki may not be exactly like the ones in Hiroshima, it is still delicious. It is slightly smaller and has less cabbage, but it is a great option in Hakata where Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki restaurants are scarce. I also tried the maruchou, which pairs well with alcohol. It was tender and flavorful.

I'm from Hiroshima. I'm very particular about okonomiyaki (Hiroshima style?). It's been a while since I had okonomiyaki and it wasn't bad, but something was different. Even though it's made with flour, cabbage, noodles, egg, sauce, etc., the taste shouldn't be that different, but it's a completely different okonomiyaki. It's so complex.

I visited the new store #Kinsaiya Hakata Station Underground Mall Store in Hakata Station, Fukuoka City on November 29, 2022 (Tuesday). This store used to operate in the basement of the new Mitsui Building in front of Hakata Station, but it relocated and had a new opening on September 20. Looking at the menu, they not only serve okonomiyaki but also offer super high-end rice bowls. To place an order, there is a QR code at each table that you can scan with your smartphone. However, I wonder what people who forget or don't have their smartphones do. I ordered the Nikudama Soba Set for 850 yen (tax included). On the table, there was the famous Okonomi sauce from Hiroshima. It was cut with a spatula. The sweet sauce mixed well with the soba. The cross-section showed a double layer of soba and vegetables. After watching Mao-chan's ice show at Hakata no Mori, on the way back to Hakata, all the shops were just about to stop taking orders. Still, I wanted to drink, so I quickly ordered along with the last order.
