The other day on Sunday, I went hiking up Tenpaiyama with my 6th grade daughter. After coming down from the summit, we stopped by Musashiji Temple, and a little further down, we saw a sign for a cafe. I knew there was a cafe there from a previous visit, so I thought we'd stop by this time. My daughter was saying she was thirsty, so I thought we could get some drinks. The cafe is called "Kominka Cafe Kagura," and it's a renovated old folk house that is over 120 years old. The staff mentioned that lunch was fully booked for the day, but it was okay to just have drinks for a short time. It seems to be quite popular. So, we went inside the calm atmosphere with jazz music playing, and after looking at the menu for a bit, I chose the blended coffee, and my daughter chose the homemade lemon squash. The drinks were 550 yen each (tax included), with an additional 20 yen per drink due to the recent rise in ingredient prices. After a short wait, our drinks arrived. My blended coffee came with a caramel biscuit from the Belgian brand "Poppy's" as a tea snack. It was a thin caramel and cinnamon-scented biscuit that was quite delicious and went well with the coffee. My daughter said her homemade lemon squash was very tasty. We only had drinks this time, but the renovated old house space was very calming and had a really nice atmosphere. We had a relaxing time even though it was just for a short while. I would love to come back next time for lunch.

At the foot of Mt. Tenpai, there is a 120-year-old traditional house turned cafe. I saw it on social media and decided to visit. The cafe is located up a narrow mountain road. The spacious interior of the renovated traditional house was welcoming, and it was nice to see that they have taken their time with the space, unlike some places nowadays. I heard that the cafe has been operating for about 3 years, and it used to be a soba restaurant before.
Both of us ordered the seasonal vegetable lunch set (1320 yen). You can choose from two main dishes.
My husband had the "Tender Pork with Onion Tomato Sauce". The pork was indeed tender, and the tomato sauce had a gentle flavor.
I chose the "Tender Healthy Chicken" and opted for the "Seared Miso Mayo" sauce. The chicken breast was thick and tender, and the rich miso mayo sauce complemented it well. The portion was generous, so I shared half with my husband.
We also enjoyed the "Chicken Liver in Red Wine Stew", which was surprisingly tender and flavorful. The "Taro with Wasabi Miso Sauce" was also delicious, and the homemade pickles were a nice touch.
The pumpkin salad was well-prepared, and the quiche with potatoes and mentaiko (spicy cod roe) was more like a fluffy omelette. The seaweed miso soup and the shiny rice in a clay pot were also tasty, although the photo came out blurry.
The cooking was done by a slightly older master (male), and the meal felt more like a home-cooked experience rather than a trendy cafe lunch. The atmosphere was pleasant, and we enjoyed a leisurely meal.

This is a hidden old house cafe that makes you wonder if there really is a shop here... It has a spacious interior but not many seats, so you can relax without feeling crowded. They offer two types of set lunches, the "Hana Lunch" and the "Kura Lunch." This time, I tried the pork sauté with miso and sansho pepper sauce (I think it was the "Kura" lunch), and it was delicious. The pork sauté was juicy and tender. The appetizer of liver simmered in red wine was a challenge for me as I don't like liver, and unfortunately, I still didn't like it. My friend who came with me also didn't like liver and ended up leaving it uneaten. There seem to be quite a few people who don't like liver, so I wish they would offer a different option. The staff were friendly, the atmosphere of the restaurant was nice, and overall it was a good experience.

Located at the foot of Mt. Tenpai, this old folk house stands alone in an extraordinary setting. The menu offers elegant dishes to match. First, the water served is delicious. Therefore, the coffee is also delicious. For my meal, I ordered the Chicken Salt Koji Lunch, which was exquisite. The chicken was incredibly tender throughout, without any tough or chewy parts. The salt koji seasoning was perfectly balanced, with a refined taste that spread throughout the chicken, allowing you to savor it from the first bite to the last. The mustard sauce had a mild and creamy flavor without any sharpness, allowing even sensitive palates to enjoy the taste of mustard. The basil sauce on the farfalle pasta, combined with the natural flavors of the ingredients, created a wonderfully rich and deep taste. The sauces alone must have taken considerable time and effort to perfect, and to be able to experience their flavors in an instant is a true luxury. I found it hard to part with the dishes after finishing them. The quiche had a soft and rich flavor, possibly from the addition of kinako to the potatoes. It's the perfect dish to enjoy chilled on a hot summer day. The Coffee Jelly a la Mode had a delightful lack of bitterness in the jelly, allowing it to harmonize well with the other ingredients (mochi, red beans, whipped cream). The coffee had a smooth richness and gentle bitterness, making me realize how different coffee can taste with good water and skilled brewing. Each sip was a joy of encountering a good cup of coffee. After returning to everyday life, I found myself missing everything about this restaurant - the food, sweets, coffee, as well as the wabi-sabi ambiance and atmosphere. I can't wait to visit again.

It had a nostalgic atmosphere of an old folk house! It was lunchtime on a weekday, but the restaurant was full of female customers. I had to wait a little, but the staff were very friendly and made the wait enjoyable. The dishes were perfectly seasoned and the portion sizes were just right! There were three lunch options, all of which seemed healthy. I highly recommend this place and would love to go again in the future! ^_^

I ordered the cake set for 700 yen. The cheesecake came with berry and grapefruit jam, which was delicious. I would love to try the lunch set next time.
