I had heard from an acquaintance from Fukuoka that their "Steamed Chestnut" was exquisite and it had piqued my interest. During my "Kyushu Round Railway Trip," I had the perfect opportunity to stop by when using Hakata Station. It was around 8:20 am on a weekday. The shop is located on the 1st floor of Hakata Station Building "DEITOS" in a corner of "Ippin Street." If you head from the central concourse of the station, it is located at the far end of "Ippin Street," closer to "Hakata Hankyu." It is a counter-only shop but quite large within "Ippin Street." It had an elegant atmosphere as expected from a long-established store. When I visited around 8:20 am, the showcase was almost empty. When I asked the staff, they mentioned that various items would be restocked around 8:40 am to 9:00 am. So, I revisited around 8:50 am, and they were just arranging the newly arrived Japanese sweets in the showcase. By this time, customers were starting to come in one after another. The age group of the customers was on the higher side. There were around 20 types of Japanese sweets, all with a traditional and elegant look. The prices were normal to slightly on the higher side. I bought "Steamed Chestnut 411 yen" x 2 and "Yabure Manju 130 yen" x 2 (excluding tax). I enjoyed them in my room at "JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Oita" after 9 pm. The "Steamed Chestnut" was a triangular piece about 4-5 bites in size. It had a steamed sweet bean jelly topped with chestnut simmered in kanten. A chestnut leaf was also included (though it had wilted by the time of eating). The sweet bean jelly was moist and dense, with plenty of diced chestnuts mixed in. The simmered chestnut had a moist outer skin and a soft inside. It had a subtly elegant sweetness, and the chestnut flavor spread throughout the mouth. The slight bitterness of the chestnut skin added a nice accent. It was exactly to my liking. I wish I had bought more. The "Yabure Manju" was an unevenly shaped manju about 2-3 bites in size. The coarse red bean paste was wrapped in thin dough, with the red bean paste floating in some places on the surface (which seemed to be the origin of the name). The red bean paste had a firm texture, yet soft and well-made. It had an elegant sweetness, and the flavor of the azuki beans was prominent. It was also delicious, but compared to the "Steamed Chestnut," it felt a bit less impressive. The "Steamed Chestnut" is available only for a limited time from mid-September to late December and is sold only in-store. I wonder when I will be able to have it again...

◉Genre: Japanese sweets ◉Area: Inside Daiei department store in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City ◉Access: A few minutes' walk from JR Hakata Station ◉Parking: Not available (there is a partnership parking lot) ◉Credit card payment: Not available ◉Number of visits: First visit ◉Number of reviews: 1st review On this day, I visited "Suzukake JR Hakata City Daiei Store" on a whim. ◇Exterior and Interior This Japanese sweets shop is located in the "souvenir market" of Daiei, a large commercial facility directly connected to JR Hakata Station in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City. It is a long-established store that originated in Fukuoka and is said to be almost 100 years old. However, each store has a modern touch and stands out from other stores. ◇No seating available. ◇Menu Structure Featuring their signature products such as Suzunomochi and Dorayaki, they also offer a lineup that varies by month. Since it was June, there were items like Obanyaki and Wakayu available. The items I ordered are as follows: - Suzunomochi (119 yen) → Including tax. I decided to purchase Suzunomochi again, even though they offer items unique to each month. I found it surprisingly delicious last time. The cute bell-shaped design of the Suzu (bell) and its bite-sized portion with a good shelf life make it versatile. The key points are the crispy texture of the mochi and the subtle sweetness of the anko (sweet red bean paste). Overall, it is great for snacking, serving guests, or as a gift. ◆Strong Points The Japanese sweets are so delicious that they seem to have even more potential. ◆Customer Service Slightly more polite than average. ◆Conclusion I felt like I found a Japanese sweets shop that I like after a long time. Next time, I will visit the main store. Thank you for the treat! ^ ^

I bought a small size bell-shaped Monaka and round mochi for myself. Mmm, delicious! The sweet red bean paste is elegant and the mochi is chewy! I only bought a little for a taste test, but I regret not buying more. I want to keep it all for myself and not give any to my family! I have to go back to Fukuoka to buy more (*^◯^*)

When I come to Fukuoka on a business trip, I always explore the souvenir section at Deitos at least once a day. This time, while wandering around, I was intrigued by this new addition. It had a different atmosphere from the surroundings, emanating from the showcase, and I couldn't help but be curious. During my business trips, I always make sure to have dinner at a certain ramen shop in the underground of Hakata Station, and afterwards, I was drawn to this place and ended up buying strawberry daifuku and bracken rice cakes. When I returned to the hotel, I immediately tried the strawberry daifuku, which had a very refined and balanced taste... The bracken rice cakes were also delicious, to the point where I didn't feel the need for the accompanying roasted soybean flour... I enjoyed them very much. Thank you for the meal.

Once upon a time, I received a memory of a small, cute bell-shaped sweet called Suzunomasu. It had a familiar feeling, and the main store is located in Nakasu. This time, I also bought Uguisumochi, both filled with crunchy sweet bean paste. The outer shell of the Suzunomasu can become dry and hard, so it doesn't last long. It's edible, though. At 108 yen per piece, this size is a bit pricey.

For home souvenirs in Fukuoka, I recommend visiting Suzukake for their delicious treats. The Suzunomochi mini dorayaki is soft and chewy, while the Honwarabi mochi is incredibly tasty and only available at the store. The Kokoha features a sweet filling inside a tsukune potato. The tiger-patterned dorayaki is a luxurious treat that pairs perfectly with tea. It was all so delicious that it disappeared in no time.

This is a record of the past. When it comes to Fukuoka, you think of Suzukake! So, I went there. This year, there was also a limited-time Suzukake shop at Kyoto Isetan, so I had more opportunities to eat there. But there are many shops in the Hakata area! There seem to be shops with cafes too... However, I didn't have much time, so I went to the Suzukake shop in the souvenir area of Hakata Station. Surprisingly, it wasn't very crowded. I wanted to try various things, but my stomach had its limits, so I just got one Daifuku. This is a seasonal sweet, apparently. It's a Japanese sweet where a Daifuku filled with sweet bean paste is wrapped in shiso leaves. I had never seen this Japanese sweet before, and even when I searched online, it seems like it's not available in Kansai. I already like shiso leaves as a condiment for meals, so I was eager to try it without any reservations. When I ate it, the fragrance of the shiso leaves and the sweetness of the Daifuku blended well! The sweet bean paste wasn't overly sweet to begin with, but it was a perfect taste for the beginning of the hot season. With the current heat, I think something like Kuzumochi would be better... Next time, I want to make Hakata my last stop on a trip and bring some back with me... Looking at the sweets online now, I realize that there were more options in July that suited my taste. I want to buy a JR West Sugoroku ticket and try my luck in Hakata...

(Visited 2022.3) On a weekday in the latter half of March. I came to Fukuoka again this season to watch the preseason games - Part 8 (Souvenir Edition 1) After two days of watching games, I took a direct express bus to Hakata Station. Gotta buy souvenirs before heading back home lol I arrived at "Suzukake JR Hakata City Deitos Store" (^_^♪ Address: 1-1 Hakata Station Central Street, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, JR Hakata City Deitos Annex Opening hours: 8:00-21:00 Closed on days corresponding to JR Hakata City Deitos Annex ■ Strawberry Daifuku 324 yen/piece I bought this four years ago last time lol It seems like they are doing the exact same thing as before... The softness of the rice cake, the elegant sweetness of the red bean paste, and the Amaou strawberries - Delicious!! Even when you take a big bite, it doesn't fall apart, which is nice. Since the expiration date is only for that day, it was a good idea to go back early (to keep the family happy lol). They were happy when I said it was the delicious one I had before, but tasty things never disappoint. Thank you for the meal♪

Dorayaki, Mizu-Yokan, Anmitsu, and small, chewy dorayaki. The elegant sweetness is never tiring no matter how many you eat. There are refreshing bean paste in the Mizu-Yokan and a rich but not overpowering bean paste in the Anmitsu. Both dorayaki have completely different doughs to enjoy. I love Suzugake. Thank you for the feast!

In Fukuoka, there is a famous long-established Japanese confectionery shop called Suzukake. This time, I visited the store located at Hakata Station. Among the souvenir shops, there weren't many varieties of traditional Japanese sweets, but what caught my eye the most today was the strawberry daifuku. Although it looked slightly small for a daifuku, the thin outer layer and the glimpse of smooth red bean paste inside captured the hearts of daifuku lovers. Now, for the taste test! When I took a big bite, I found a large strawberry inside, almost the same size as the daifuku itself. The sweetness and sourness of the strawberry, combined with the smooth red bean paste, created an exquisite flavor. The refined sweetness of the red bean paste complemented the presence of the strawberry, making it delicious. This is what a strawberry daifuku should be. Whoever came up with the idea of combining strawberries with daifuku is a genius in my opinion. The small-sized monaka was also delicious and easy to enjoy in one bite. I look forward to trying seasonal Japanese sweets next time. Thank you for the meal.

I have become completely obsessed with sakuramochi this spring, wandering around like a zombie in search of it. I never thought I would be so hooked on sakuramochi. However, it's hard to find fresh wagashi at places like Maimingu or Deitos, as they mainly sell boxed baked goods. But then, I found a savior in Suzukake! Among the many shops, its elegant design stood out. They don't clutter the place with boxed items or unnecessary ads, and you can select wagashi from a showcase like choosing jewelry. And there it was, sakuramochi, or rather sakurahamamochi, displayed in the showcase. I only bought one, but it was neatly packed in a box for me. The mochi, made without using glutinous rice flour or dyeing the mochi pink, had a beautiful light purple sweet bean paste inside. The quality was excellent, and the price was very reasonable. It's amazing to find such a wonderful item in such an unexpected place. I might end up stopping by every day after work, which is a bit scary... I can already imagine the staff saying, "Here comes the sakuramochi monster." It was a pleasure, and I'll definitely be back for more. Thank you for the delicious treat!

I had a great time chatting with a local customer at a food stall in Hakata! They recommended a souvenir called "Suzukake" that they thought I should definitely buy. They suggested the "Suzuno Dorayaki" (a small but delicious dorayaki) which had the perfect balance of mochi skin and red bean filling. They also recommended the "Suzuno Monaka" which was shaped like a bell and had a great balance of flavors. Both the bell-shaped monaka and dorayaki were delicious and easy to eat. It was a great souvenir that I wouldn't have known about if it weren't for the local customer. I'm grateful for the recommendation. It was a nice memory.

A certain kabuki actor's wife recommended a shop on TV. She said the "Suzunomochi" here is a must-try. Well, it's quite elegant. So, when I had the chance to visit Hakata, I decided to stop by. The "Suzunomochi" recommended by the actor's wife was good, but I chose to select from the "Seasonal Fresh Sweets" instead. There were many chestnut sweets for autumn, and as a chestnut lover, I couldn't ignore them. I bought the following three items: - "Steamed Chestnut" (411 yen including tax): A steamed yokan made with chestnuts from Kumamoto Prefecture. - "Chestnut Mochi" (260 yen including tax): A mochi wrapped in chestnuts from Kumamoto Prefecture, Tokachi-produced red bean paste, and Hikotaro sticky rice from Yamagata Prefecture. - "Salted Soybean Daifuku" (173 yen including tax): A daifuku made by carefully pounding Hikotaro sticky rice from Yamagata Prefecture every morning. The red kidney beans enhance the sweetness of the filling. All the sweets had a subtle sweetness, not overly sweet, and were satisfying. They were all rich in flavor. My favorite would have to be the "Steamed Chestnut," as it was filled with plenty of chestnuts.

Small in size, easy to eat, and cute! The mini dorayaki has a combination of chunky and smooth red bean paste, with a chewy texture from rice flour in the dough. The outside is crispy like monaka. I'd like to try different varieties as well.

The classic Shiratama Zenzai for 497 yen and Yame no Nodocha for 465 yen are both mildly sweet products. They also have autumn sweets made with chestnuts.

Suzunomochi, Suzunozaima. I thought it was a cute dorayaki, but it's totally different. It's chewy. The zaima is also elegant. This is good. They don't have it at the airport, so I'll buy it here and take it home.
