Toyokuni House, the oldest existing collective housing built in the early Showa period, is a retro building that is also used as a movie setting. Nestled in a corner of this old and worn-down structure is a self-roasting coffee shop. Despite its visibly aged appearance, the mysterious charm exuded by the ivy-covered facade is breathtakingly picturesque and nostalgic, like visiting a friend's home. The interior, filled with playful touches, is a surprising contrast to the dilapidated exterior. Imagine an Art Deco-style round window and a cozy living room where the family gathers. Decorative shelves, burnt magazines, gadgets, and various ornaments create a unique analog world view. The carefully crafted designs, from logo-printed slippers and notebooks to the meticulously calculated details, evoke a scene straight out of a movie. A signature menu item is the Torigobou Nori Toast, featuring eight square-sized pieces with a rustic look adorned with mint and flags. Between the fluffy bread slices lies a tender salad of burdock, carrot, and chicken with soft-baked seaweed. The finely sliced burdock, with a slight crunch, pairs perfectly with the small-bodied salad. The salad is lightly flavored with a hint of mayo, complementing the sweetness of the carrot and the savory aroma of the seaweed, enhanced by a touch of pepper. When sandwiched between lightly toasted bread, this small yet flavorful dish packs a satisfying punch. Enjoyed with fragrant self-roasted coffee, the homemade, gentle flavors are sure to become addictive. The Peruvian citrus notes and moderate bitterness of the coffee offer a rich yet refreshing taste. Served in an understated branded cup, it elevates the experience to a higher level. The iced coffee, made with double the amount of beans for a luxurious touch, delivers a bitter yet clear and fresh flavor.
