I have known this chick-shaped snack since I was a child. It's cute, so my grandmother used to buy it for me often. It's a nostalgic snack that has remained the same. It has white bean paste inside, with a gentle flavor. The package is decorated with a Hina doll version, which made me realize it's a famous confectionery from Fukuoka. I bought a box as it's the perfect souvenir with just the right amount inside.

To Mineg store at Hiyoko Honpo Yoshinodo - They were selling a seasonal and limited edition chestnut Hiyoko from Hakata. They use domestically grown Japanese chestnuts and Kagawa-produced Wasanbon sugar for the chestnut paste, giving it an elegant sweetness. The chestnut Hiyoko comes in a pack of 3 for 594 yen (tax included). I bought some for souvenirs and for myself. It was a cute and delicious treat with plenty of chestnut flavor. It's always nice to enjoy seasonal flavors.

I received a souvenir from Hakata - a huge box of Hiyo-chan from Yoshinodo! They have delicious manju, sablé, cookies, and senbei from Hakata. The peanut-filled treats are amazing! I also enjoyed Yoshinodo's Western-style sweets like chocolate cake, madeleines, and fruit pound cake. The Hiyo-chan manju is my favorite, but the big box was overwhelming. However, being able to enjoy a variety of Yoshinodo's treats was great!

I bought souvenirs at Hakata Station. First, I got "Hiyoko". What! They have tea-flavored Hiyoko too? It says it's made with Yame tea matcha! Looks delicious ♪ I'll buy it! Let's try the tea-flavored Hiyoko. This is delicious. I like the regular Hiyoko too, but I also like the tea-flavored one. It seems like they have different varieties depending on the season. If they have tea-flavored Hiyoko next time, I'll buy it again ♪ Thank you for the meal!

I tried a product called "Hiyoko no Yakimochi" because I was curious. It has white bean paste and amaou strawberries. It's luxurious and not too sweet, very delicious. The mochi skin is chewy and tasty even when cold. I wonder how they keep it so soft? It's a limited-time product, but I wish they would sell it all year round.

The "Hiyoko's Jealousy" completely missed the mark in terms of naming and packaging. It cost around 600 yen for a pack of 5, but the shape was nothing like a chick (hiyoko). Where did the chick go? It would have been closer to call it "Ume-gaeshi Mochi" from Dazaifu. It seems to be made with rice flour, and filled with chewy, sweet amaou strawberry filling. Sorry for the messy cross-section photo...

Yoshinodo, known for their famous Hiyoko sweets, offers a variety of delicious treats aside from Hiyoko. One of my favorite items is the Soft Amaou (540 yen), which features Amaou strawberry puree mixed into cookie dough. It has a moist and soft texture, with a harmonious blend of sweetness from white chocolate and the tartness of Amaou strawberries. The Hiyoko Yakimochi with Strawberry (119 yen) consists of Amaou strawberry pulp wrapped in baked rice cake with strawberry paste. The chewy texture is delightful, with a rich aroma and flavor of strawberries. The Strawberry Hiyoko (432 yen) is a milk bun filled with Amaou strawberry paste. The rich aroma and tartness of Amaou strawberries blend beautifully in the filling. All of these items feature the king of strawberries, Amaou, and are limited edition winter products.

I came to Hakata on a summer trip to Kyushu, full of travel romance. After a long time, I visited Hakata. In a slightly tipsy mood, I went to Maingu to look for souvenirs. Recently, popular products seem to be items such as Hakata dorayaki from Meigetsudo and menbei from Fukutaro, but when it comes to Hakata souvenirs, "Hiyoko" has always been a classic choice. Even when I was a child, it was a staple souvenir to buy Hiyoko when going on a school trip to Ise or to Kyushu. However, I was surprised when I saw Hiyoko being sold as a Tokyo souvenir in Asakusa. Copying... no, why is the same Hiyoko being sold there? People in eastern Japan seem to recognize Hiyoko as a Tokyo souvenir that has expanded to Tokyo in time for the Tokyo Olympics. By the way, it was founded in the first year of Taisho (1912) at Yoshinodo in Iizuka City. Iizuka is a mining town. The people there preferred sweet snacks as snacks for coal miners. It is also located on the Nagasaki Kaido, also known as the Sugar Road, where sugar landed in Nagasaki was transported throughout the country. ◇ Cha Hiyoko 3 pieces... 486 yen (tax included) ◇ Sofull (Sofuru) Yame tea... 98 yen (tax included) ◇ Hiyoko's financiers... 98 yen (tax included) Seasonal limited Yame matcha Hiyoko was being sold. This is a Fukuoka limited product not sold in Tokyo Hiyoko. A Hiyoko with a rich aroma made by combining white bean paste with matcha bean paste made from freshly refined matcha from Yame's beautiful green tea garden. It's an adult Hiyoko that can also be felt bitter. Hiyoko is cute in appearance after all. When you are stared at with lovely round eyes, it makes your heart beat faster. Sofull Yame tea is also a limited-time offer. This also uses Yame matcha. The moist and soft chocolate cookie and matcha surprisingly go well together. I personally found it to be the most delicious, especially because it has a strong bitterness. Finally, Hiyoko's financiers. A financier in the shape of a Hiyoko. The naming is also cute♪ A slightly sweet baked confectionery with a plump, milky flavor. I think this is a taste that will be liked by people of all ages and genders. If you go to a direct sales store instead of a souvenir shop, you can also buy items individually. It is also possible to buy various products little by little, so you can create your own original souvenirs. After all, when it comes to representing Hakata, or rather Kyushu, the classic souvenir is Yoshinodo's Hiyoko. Thank you for the meal.

I purchased souvenirs at Hakata Station in February 2019. The souvenir section at Hakata Station includes Ming's souvenirs. The souvenir section at Fukuoka Airport is also decent, but as of February 2019, the domestic flight second floor souvenir section is under renovation. Therefore, I had to look for souvenirs at Hakata Station before heading to the airport. I took a weekday off for this trip, so I bought the limited edition strawberry version of Hiyoko and Yumeya's strawberry-flavored rice crackers. The appearance may not be vibrant, but the strawberry scent is strong! I wonder if it's considered cruel to cut the Hiyoko in half with a knife, as only food bloggers might do. In this age where people criticize you for breaking the dam curry while eating, I ate it while being a little conscious of such things.

Hiyoko Honpo Yoshinodo is located in Hakata Station, in the MinQ building. This is the first store, but do you know where the second store is located? It has been 2 months since my last visit. Last time, I bought Hiyoko Sablé, so this time I aimed for this: Hiyoko's Yaki Mochi Sakura for 648 yen, a pack of 5. I had received it as a souvenir before and wanted to try it myself. I paid at the register. There were other products that caught my eye, but I resisted the temptation. When I got home, I aged it in my snack tower as usual. And finally, it was time to open it. It's not a very large yaki mochi, but it looks beautiful. When I tried it, it was one of the best mochi snacks I've had. It is made with rice flour, giving it a chewy texture. Hiyoko's Yaki Mochi is available year-round, but the Sakura flavor is only sold from February to April. The sakura bean paste is made by finely chopping sakura leaves into white bean paste, which I love. The pack of 5 was gone in no time. Next time I visit, I want to buy the current limited edition: Hiyoko's Yaki Mochi Fukuoka Yame Tea.

Located in Hakata Station, there is a store called Hiyoko Honpo Yoshinodo. I was surprised to realize that it has been almost 4 years since I last bought something here (laughs). It's nice to be able to track these things since I started using Tabelog. This area is highly competitive and all the stores have good customer service, so I always have trouble deciding where to go each time. This time, I was intrigued by this item displayed in front of the store.
Hiyoko Sablé - 756 yen
In the Kanto region, there is that famous big Sablé that is considered the original, right? I love that one too, but it's been a while since I had this Hiyoko Sablé. The service at the register was quick and stress-free. When I opened the box at home, I couldn't help but smile at the size. When I tried it, it brought back nostalgic memories (laughs). It's a light and delicious Sablé, not too sweet. These kinds of treats never get old, right? Sometimes, people don't like overly sweet snacks, so this Hiyoko Sablé is convenient as a gift for someone. I will definitely buy it again.

On the way back from my trip in February 2015, I was intrigued by the Fukuoka-exclusive strawberry hiyoko that I had seen at the airport on the way there! I decided to buy it as a souvenir, despite all the other limited edition products around. The outer layer of the hiyoko was the same as usual, but the filling inside was different. It didn't use unnecessary coloring, so the color wasn't vibrant, but it had a white bean paste with a hint of strawberry color. When I tasted it, there was a subtle strawberry flavor. It goes well with green tea, of course, but also pairs nicely with black tea. I bought the 11-piece set for 1,620 yen and brought it as a souvenir for my colleagues. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal.

Chick-shaped steamed buns have been around for a long time. They are a product that can be found anywhere because there are factories in Kyushu and Kanto. It's amazing that this chick bun has been around for 100 years. Some people say that the taste varies depending on the manufacturing factory, but I personally can't really tell the difference. I think I have bought this chick bun the most at this store, Mainingu. The store has good customer service, which might be due to the fierce competition with nearby stores. They also have handmade large chick buns, but I prefer the regular ones as they are easier to eat. It's the season for cherry blossom chick buns, but when I tried them before, it felt like the cherry blossom paste and the dough didn't go well together. I hope they continue to maintain the usual taste in the future.

It seems that the chick mascot celebrated its 100th anniversary in December 2012. One of the commemorative items is the Fukuoka limited edition Sakura Chick. However, I recall that two years ago it was the Sakura Chick for the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen... but I won't dwell on the details. Sakura Chick 3 pieces for 472 yen. The cross-section of the chick in the photo at the store was a beautiful sakura color, so I thought it had evolved, but when I cut it at home, the color was duller than in the photo. It had a gentle taste of sakura-scented anko and was delicious, no doubt.

I received this as a souvenir from Fukuoka. As the name suggests, it is a cake shaped like a chick made of financiers. This cake uses egg whites instead of egg yolks, so it has a light texture, and it is moist with margarine instead of butter, with a slightly nutty flavor from the almond powder. It was delicious! ◎

I heard that a "Kyushu Products Exhibition" was being held at the Kintetsu Department Store in Yokkaichi City, so I went to check it out. While wandering around the venue, I came across "hiyoko manju" (chick-shaped sponge cake). Hiyoko manju is a popular souvenir from Tokyo, so many people mistakenly think it originated there, but it's actually a specialty from Hakata in Fukuoka. It made me crave hiyoko manju, but I decided to try a Kyushu limited product called "hiyoko-shaped financiers" this time. To explain briefly, these are financiers shaped like baby chicks. They are not too sweet, with a subtle buttery flavor and a slightly light texture for a financier. They are moist with a strong milk flavor and have a good melt-in-your-mouth quality. They are delicious on their own, but I think they would be even better paired with hot coffee or tea. This is a snack that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, so it would make a great gift that would surely be appreciated by the recipient.
