In a hurry, we couldn't quite settle with just the iron pot dumplings we had eaten. Even though it was past 10 pm, being on a trip seemed to make us want to go to another nearby restaurant we had bookmarked. I thought it was Marukaya, but it was actually "Kawaya" instead. I had seen a Fukuoka travel blog where the blogger recommended trying chicken skin in Hakata, so I was eager to try it. When I looked at Kawaya's website, I saw they had many franchise locations in Tokyo and Aichi as well. When we opened the door and asked if it was okay to come in without a reservation, they cheerfully replied, "We'll prepare a table for you right away!" We were seated at the counter after a short wait. Since I had just had a beer, I ordered a highball this time. The appetizer was cabbage, and I enjoyed it crispy. Then, I ordered the Hakata-style grilled chicken skin that I had been wanting to try. I ordered three skewers, each priced at 120 yen. The chicken skin was crispy on the outside, fragrant, and had a chewy texture when bitten into, which was delicious. I also tried the meat miso-stuffed crispy peppers for 220 yen. The thick peppers were not as bitter as one might expect, and they were tasty. I also had the "Bara" skewer with onions for 120 yen. I wished I had brought the yuzu shichimi and Sansho pepper from "Yamatsu Tsujita" in Osaka Sakai with me, as they would have enhanced the flavor of the meat. I also tried the chicken thigh skewer for 120 yen, which had onions sandwiched between the meat. The meat's deliciousness was deep and rich when chewed. I also had two skewers of shishito peppers for 300 yen. Unfortunately, they were sold out of onigiri when I tried to order. The late hour meant they had run out of rice. When we asked for the bill, they served us a complimentary chicken soup as a finishing touch. It was a warm soup that comforted our stomachs. The total came to 3,990 yen for two people. We spent about 40 minutes there. The restaurant had both counter and table seating, but it was not very big, so it was always full of customers. The restroom was unisex. Despite that, the atmosphere was lively, and both tourists like us and local young customers were all welcomed warmly. As we were leaving, the staff apologized for making us wait, but we didn't feel like we had waited long at all. Thank you for the delicious meal.
