(2022.06.19) Located across from the Yanagibashi Union Market, also known as the "kitchen of Hakata," is the Seikawa Sun Road Shopping Street. This nostalgic shopping street, spanning just about 100 meters, is filled with shops such as greengrocers and butcher shops that are closely tied to everyday life, making it still bustling with activity. On the second floor of this shopping street is a Sri Lankan curry specialty shop called "Monara." Despite feeling a bit anxious climbing the narrow and dim staircase, upon opening the sliding door, I found the 40-seat dining area filled with customers. The interior exuded an exotic atmosphere, and in addition to enjoying a meal, customers can also purchase curry sets, coconut powder, herbal tea, and other items to recreate the Sri Lankan curry experience at home. I decided to try the most popular item on the lunch menu, the "Dry Curry." Although the original spiciness level is said to be slightly spicier than the typical spicy level of Japanese curry, I requested the "Real Red" level, which is double the usual spiciness. The curry, made by a chef from Sri Lanka using over 30 types of spices and coconut milk as the main ingredients, was light and healthy due to its low oil content. The "Dry Curry" was topped generously with chicken, onions, bell peppers, and even cashew nuts, creating a balance between the flavorful curry sauce and the dry curry. The Tandoori Chicken, with plenty of yogurt mixed in, was moist and tender, allowing the perfect blend of spices to shine through. Overall, the dishes were crafted to appeal to a wide range of tastes.
