I received this as a souvenir from Fukuoka. This chick is different from the usual ones, as it contains sweet potato paste made with Anno sweet potatoes inside. The moist and rich sweet potato flavor and sweetness revived my tired mind. Thank you for the treat!

This is a time-shifted post. I bought a souvenir for myself at Hakata Station. One of the famous items in Hakata is "Hiyoko". Let's not get into the debate of which one is the true specialty (laughs). I got the "Hiyoko Sablé" with six pieces. It's been a while since I had this. It's bigger than I expected. It's also quite filling. It's simple and delicious without any unnecessary ingredients. I enjoyed some delicious food. Thank you for the meal.

Located in JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka City, there is a wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop called Maingu Hakata, which sells a popular local specialty called Hiyoko. Hiyoko has a history of over a hundred years and is a representative confectionery of Fukuoka. It is shaped like a baby chick, with a generous amount of sweet bean paste filling inside a steamed bun. It is quite substantial and has a satisfying texture, although it is quite sweet.

Sakura Chick (Hiyoko) [Kyushu/Okinawa] Fukuoka Hakata's famous souvenir "Hiyoko Manju" is now available in a limited edition sakura flavor for spring! 7 pieces for 1,080 yen. The cute pink packaging is perfect for spring. At first glance, it looks like a regular chick. When you cut it open, you'll find a light pink sweet bean paste inside. It's made with condensed milk and white bean paste with minced domestic sakura leaves. The taste is subtly sakura-flavored and very delicious! It's less sweet than regular chick manju, making it very easy to eat.

This was given to me as a souvenir from Fukuoka, said to be a limited edition item from Kyushu. The package is cute and yellow. The financiers have a soft texture with a subtle almond scent. It adds a nice touch to this snack. The ingredients include eggs, sugar, margarine, flour, almond powder, condensed milk, sorbitol, leavening agent, flavoring, beta-carotene color, as listed on the back of the package. This snack feels lighter than it looks, making it easy to eat multiple pieces.

The popular Tokyo souvenir "Hiyoko" is actually originally from Fukuoka. However, this time I chose something different as a souvenir. It's the Fukuoka limited edition spring special "Sakura Hiyoko" to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the famous Hiyoko sweets. It is available from January 15, 2013, until early April 2013, in limited quantities. I bought a pack of 3 for 472 yen to bring home as a souvenir. When I opened it at home, I found that the faces were all squished. The faces are the charm of Hiyoko, so they should have come up with better packaging to prevent them from getting squished during transport. This affected the souvenir effect... Anyway, I regained my composure and quickly tried it. It has a milk-flavored skin made from wheat flour from Kyushu, filled with white bean paste containing condensed milk and chopped Japanese cherry blossom leaves. The subtle cherry blossom flavor is nice, but the bean paste was a bit too crumbly. It's not overly sweet, which is good, but overall it's just an ordinary souvenir manju. I wouldn't buy it as a gift for someone else, at least not in this soft paper box type packaging. In any case, I've never bought it for myself before, I've only received it as a gift. 60 points.

Recently, Yoshinodo, a shop known for its various variations of hiyoko (a traditional Japanese sweet), has released a winter limited edition "Strawberry Hiyoko" in Fukuoka. I bought it as a souvenir. It's my first time seeing a hiyoko with red bean paste containing Amaou strawberries. The red bean paste has a rich aroma and acidity of Hakata Amaou strawberries, creating a flavorful strawberry paste. The outer layer has a subtle milk flavor, which pairs well with the strawberry paste. The Strawberry Hiyoko has a rich strawberry flavor and is quite delicious. I've tried various types of hiyoko, but this one is the best.

Today, I had lunch at the underground mall in Hakata Station. Since I had come all the way to Hakata Station, on my way back from lunch, I stopped by Daimaru and picked up some hiyoko from Yoshinodo as a souvenir for my home. I chose a set that included both hiyoko and hiyoko sablé. My wife and kids love hiyoko, but to be honest, I prefer the hiyoko sablé because I feel like it doesn't dry out my mouth when I eat it. Having hiyoko on the dining table just makes me feel warm inside, you know?

Sakura Chick: Bought at Hakata Station while wandering around. There were regular chicks and big chicks, but I chose the limited edition Sakura Chick without hesitation. It had a different deliciousness compared to the regular ones, with a subtle sakura flavor. Unfortunately, it's already sold out as it was a limited time product. Visit for souvenir snacks. Yummy!!

Hakata Dateosu on the first floor of JR Hakata Station has a souvenir market where you can find Hiyoko Sablé from Hiyoko Honpo Yoshinodo. Hakata Hiyoko Sablé 12 pieces for 1,050 yen (tax included). When it comes to souvenirs from Hakata, Karashi mentaiko and the famous Hiyoko from Hiyoko Honpo Yoshinodo are well-known. The Hiyoko Sablé is shaped like a cute little chick. It's a delight to try something new like this. The shape of the chick makes it easier to enjoy without feeling guilty. It has a reasonable size, just the right amount of sweetness, and a nice crunchy texture. In addition to Hiyoko Sablé, they also have seasonal limited editions such as Sakura Hiyoko, Strawberry Hiyoko made with Amaou strawberries, Matcha Hiyoko, and Chestnut Hiyoko, among others. I would love to try them all someday. Check out the detailed review on Eternal Rose blog.

Continuing with the souvenirs from Hakata Station. Since it's Hakata, you definitely can't miss out on the "hiyoko manju" (chick-shaped steamed bun). The shape of these is so cute. The beak facing upwards, this shape. It looks like a baby bird begging for food from its parent. It seems like it would chirp when viewed from above. The presence or absence of the beak makes a big difference in its charm. The taste is pretty much your typical white bean paste steamed bun, but... it's just a little thing. The victory goes to the beak. There's also a "strawberry hiyoko" version, but I chose the basic "hiyoko." This one is the best. Lately, there are financiers and sablés available, and there's even a set of hiyoko family with different sizes of hiyoko. Probably, there's a father hiyoko, mother hiyoko, older brother (or sister) hiyoko, and baby hiyoko - four of them. Well, strictly speaking, father and mother hiyoko wouldn't exist (lol). But, these are really cute. "Hiyoko manju" is also available as a souvenir in Tokyo, but originally, this shop opened in Tokyo and later branched out here. Hakata is the original home of these.

Chick-shaped snacks are usually a popular souvenir from Tokyo, but I found them as a souvenir from Hakata. So, I bought a set of both chick-shaped snacks and sablé cookies at the Daimaru store on the first floor of Hakata Station. There was a seasonal limited edition sakura (cherry blossom) chick, which was quite popular. I ended up buying the regular ones, but I was tempted by the pink sakura chick as well. The chick-shaped snacks come in cute boxes, which adds to their charm.

The second daughter and her husband went on a delayed honeymoon trip. They couldn't go abroad due to her being 9 months pregnant, so they went to Huis Ten Bosch for a 2-night, 3-day trip. They brought back souvenirs, starting with the classic "hiyoko" (chick-shaped sweet). But this time, it was a strawberry-flavored one! It was the first time trying it and it was delicious. The red bean paste inside had a slight pink color, or maybe more like a red bean color (laughs). When you eat it, you can faintly smell the strawberry. The taste had a slight acidity, but it was still the usual delicious "hiyoko". Strawberries are usually associated with spring, but it seems to be a winter limited edition. Come to think of it, there are also delicious-looking strawberries at the supermarket. It's an exciting souvenir. Thank you for the feast!

I received some Hiyoko manju from a friend who visited Fukuoka. They are often mistaken as a specialty of Tokyo, but they are actually a local specialty of Fukuoka. The cute little chicks are neatly arranged inside the box. I decided to have them with tea right away. When I opened the paper bag, I saw the adorable Hiyoko manju with their round eyes... It always breaks my heart to see their innocent faces. So, I always end up eating them from the back side. They were delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I received a souvenir called "Hiyoko" from Fukuoka. It's a limited edition spring version called "Seasonal Hiyoko". It looks like a regular Hiyoko, but the inside red bean paste is sakura-colored. The paste is made with azuki beans, egg yolk, and has a sakura leaf fragrance. It tastes like a mix of traditional Japanese and Western sweets, with a milk flavor. The Hiyoko is well-baked with a moist and delicious skin.

I received a cute chick-shaped confectionery called "Hiyoko" as a souvenir from my daughter's trip to Oita. It's a limited edition version for Hinamatsuri (Doll's Day) with 5 pieces in a red box, priced at 702 yen including tax. The chick is very adorable. Although I have had Hiyoko before, it's been a long time since I last tried it. By the way, I found out that the "Hiyoko" in Tokyo and the one in Hakata are from the same company. I also saw a family version of Hiyoko online, so I would like to try that someday too.

This is a souvenir from my husband's business trip. "Chahioko" comes in a pack of 7 for 1,080 yen, with options for 3 or 11 pieces as well. It's interesting how they come in odd numbers. They also have seasonal flavors like strawberry and chestnut, so you can enjoy them all year round. My son loves matcha, so Chahioko is perfect for him. The cute faces on them are very soothing and traditional. Don't you think they look beautiful? When you cut them in half, you'll find a gentle green matcha filling with a subtle aroma. It really dries out your mouth, so make sure to have some water on hand. I'd love to try them fresh from the factory in Fukuoka sometime. In the end, my son and husband prefer Chahioko, while I prefer the regular version.
