TonTon-san, a tonkatsu restaurant that opened in September 2021, has a cute name. It is located on the way from Akasaka to the Kego area, and is about a 5-10 minute walk from Akasaka Station. There is a menu signboard, and once you enter a small alley, you will find the entrance. The interior of the restaurant has a Japanese atmosphere, with a counter for 8 seats and one table for 6 people. During lunchtime, I ordered the signature dish of this restaurant, the tonkatsu made with Shirogane pork. To compare, I ordered a half-and-half of loin and fillet. I vaguely remember having Shirogane pork somewhere before, so I looked it up on the official website. It is a type of pork raised in Iwate Prefecture, with a mix of 3 bloodlines, known for its fine muscle fibers and distinctive fat. The set meal includes pickles, miso soup, shredded cabbage, and the main tonkatsu. I was pleasantly surprised that they serve cold tea as the complimentary drink. For dipping, they offer wasabi salt and a special tonkatsu sauce. The cross-section of the tonkatsu meat was very clean, with fine fibers. First, I tried the loin. The meat inside the crispy coating was tender, and the fat was not overwhelming. It was not heavy, even as I continued to eat more pieces. Next, the fillet. It was tender without much fat, and very delicious. Personally, I found the fillet even more delicious. The miso soup was slightly on the richer side, with a delicious broth, tofu, and enoki mushrooms. It was a tasty accompaniment to the meal. The shredded cabbage was served with a dressing made with shiso leaves. It seemed like the cabbage would have been good even without the dressing. There are many tonkatsu restaurants in the area from Tenjin to Akasaka, but this is definitely one of the recommended ones.
