Sake and Side Dishes "Shakenabeibe" is a sister store! The name is fun, right? It's in Vancouver and opened in May! Upon arriving, I was like, “Wow, this place looks like a house!” The exterior really has a homey vibe! I knew I was in for a treat!
The first floor features a counter seating area in a U-shape surrounding the kitchen. (I definitely want to drink here next time!) We were seated on the second floor at a table! It has a cozy attic feel? (Not really, but you get it) and we could see the first floor being open to the ceiling, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
Still buzzing with excitement, we looked at the menu and everything looked so delicious! Here’s what we ordered:
☑︎ Sashimi platter (5 pieces) for 1,480 yen
☑︎ Extra-large grilled mackerel for 960 yen
☑︎ Kyoto duck tataki for 1,380 yen
☑︎ Donabe rice with sea bream
◆ Sashimi Platter
Since we got there a bit late (around 8:30 PM), they didn’t have five pieces of sashimi available! So, we received four pieces with a little extra of the bonito, which was incredibly fatty and delicious! Next time, I’ll definitely come earlier!
◆ Extra-large Grilled Mackerel
The staff suggested this strongly if it’s your first visit! They said to order one per person and enjoy it whole! And indeed, it was amazing!
◆ Kyoto Duck Tataki
I was enjoying it so much that I forgot to take a proper picture. The sauce, along with the duck, was incredibly tasty!
◆ Donabe Rice
Oh, I was waiting for the donabe... I love donabe! There’s something so blissful about that moment when it opens, right? It was filled with sea bream and salmon roe! I carefully mixed it without squashing the roe... and it was just heavenly (savoring). The rice from the donabe is so firm and delicious, don’t you think? Next time, I want to try the Kyoto duck and leek donabe rice!
The staff who attended to us were very pleasant, making our dining and drinking experience even more enjoyable. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, the complimentary salad was super tasty too! It had a charcoal and wine vibe that made me want to have seconds. (Is anyone getting this? Haha)
This place feels like a hidden gem!

The hidden location and the atmosphere of the restaurant were both really nice, and all the dishes were very delicious. I appreciated that the staff explained the limited menu at the start. I would like to visit the other locations in the chain as well, and I definitely want to come back here!

I visited for a banquet preview. By 6 PM, the first floor was nearly full, so a reservation is definitely necessary. We ordered two draft beers, two glasses of sake, a salad for the appetizer, a sashimi platter for two, and a whole fatty sardine, which came to 8,300 yen. It seems more cost-effective to order a course meal. The fatty sardine was as recommended—large, impressive, and truly delicious. I was also able to check out the second floor for the banquet. It turns out that if there are six or more guests, we would be seated on the second floor. The restrooms are also located on the second floor, which is convenient since we wouldn’t have to go up and down the stairs. Although there’s a large ventilation hood in the center that means we can’t see everything happening below, we could feel the lively atmosphere and it had a great vibe.

I made a reservation for a course meal. It's great that it's easily accessible since Kyoto Station is nearby. The place was a bit tucked away, but I thought that added to its charm. The fish cooked over real charcoal was outstanding. I was blown away by the deliciousness of the sanma (Pacific saury) with its tasty innards. Every dish was delicious! I definitely want to go back again.

The restaurant was a bit hard to find until you got close, but it had a great atmosphere! The staff were friendly, and I was able to enjoy my meal and have a wonderful time. The food was delicious and I was very satisfied! If I had to say one thing, it would be that the way the menu is written is somewhat unusual, making it a bit difficult to read.

All the dishes were delicious, and the atmosphere inside the restaurant was really nice. However, it took a bit longer than expected for the food to be served, so I’ll rate it -0.5. That said, it felt like a hidden gem, and my friend who came with me enjoyed it too. I've found a place that I would like to visit again!

The atmosphere was nice, and since we visited as our third stop, many items on the menu were already sold out. The staff were lovely, so we asked for recommendations and chose a few dishes. It was a pity that we couldn't try the restaurant's signature irori-yaki dishes.

On Saturday evening, we made a reservation to enter the restaurant and took a seat at the counter. The seats quickly filled up around us, and I was really glad we had made a reservation! Near the entrance, I noticed a signature from Naoki of 10-FEET! I highly recommend the assorted sashimi and the grilled fatty sardines. Personally, I thought the negitoro avocado tartare (or something like that) was incredibly delicious. While I was pondering what to drink by looking at the menu, the staff consistently came by to check on us, so we hardly needed to call them. We ordered so much that we couldn't even make it to the tai-meshi (sea bream rice), and I definitely want to visit again!

First visit. It's a hidden gem of a restaurant. Is it robatayaki? Is it irori-yaki? It doesn't really matter. The fish is simply delicious. The dishes wonderfully highlight the quality of the ingredients. Despite it being a weekday, the place was full, showing just how popular it is. The staff were also very friendly. Sitting at the counter is highly recommended. Dinner spot = Vancouver. How wonderful!

I really wanted a restaurant like this at Kyoto Station! *ˊᵕˋ* Everything I tried was delicious, but the grilled chicken liver was especially amazing! ♡ The photo shows the tuna and avocado tartare, which was also delicious! I will definitely go back again! The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice too. (୨୧ᵕ̤ᴗᵕ̤)

I was surprised at how delicious every dish was! I ordered sashimi for two, but it was so filling that four of us could enjoy it comfortably. The local sake was reasonably priced, and the staff recommended great options. I was also astonished at how affordable the bill was! Most importantly, all the staff were so friendly, and I've come to love this restaurant. I visited on a recommendation from my favorite artist, and they even pointed out where their signed memorabilia is displayed, which made me very happy! I will definitely visit again! Thank you for the wonderful meal!

I was really happy that the appetizer was namerou! The staff members were bright and cheerful, making for a fun time♪ The sea bream rice is simply delicious! It's definitely a must-try! I was thrilled that someone at the table always offered to refill for me. If I get the chance to visit Kyoto again, I would love to come back!

I visited Irori-yaki Banchiba! It's about a 6-minute walk from Kyoto Station. I went without a reservation, so I was lucky to get in at just the right time. Since it's an irori-yaki restaurant, the dishes are simple, but they use seasonal ingredients, allowing you to enjoy the seasons, and everything was delicious. The salad served as an appetizer had a homemade dressing with a nice twist that made it tasty. The big fatty sardine and sashimi platter, which the staff recommended, is definitely a must-order item. The service from the staff was excellent, and the atmosphere in the restaurant was great. It was fantastic overall. I enjoyed my meal very much. I will come again. Thank you for the meal!

"Enjoy delicious ingredients with charcoal grilling! A popular restaurant in Karasuma, Kyoto, serving tasty drinks and food, has opened a second location near Kyoto Station! It's called "Sakuzai Komebe," and we affectionately refer to it as "Banqueting Place = Vancouver" (laughs). The interior is a renovated traditional wooden house, featuring a lively counter and tables on the first floor for enjoying robatayaki (charcoal grill), while the second floor has larger tables that can accommodate over 20 people, making it suitable for solo diners, couples, and groups alike. The menu is incredibly well-balanced, offering robatayaki, sashimi, side dishes, and rice dishes.
What we ordered:
- Signature Large Fatty Mackerel Salt Grill (980 yen): The happiness of biting into this rich fatty mackerel is unparalleled, especially when enjoyed with lemon and grated daikon radish.
- Sashimi Platter (1 serving 1300 yen): A luxurious assortment of six types including salt-seared Yaitokatsuo, Okinawan bluefin tuna, yellowtail, horse mackerel, sea bream, and conger eel, all thickly cut and offering great cost performance.
- Kyoto Duck Tataki (900 yen): The umami bursts with every bite, and the rare doneness is just to my liking.
Overall, the food, atmosphere, and service were all excellent!"

The food was delicious, and the staff in the kitchen were very nice. The katsuo tataki, in particular, was amazing! However, the person sitting next to us was having an issue with their order, as they hadn't received a dish they had ordered. When they asked at the time of payment, "Is the item still on the bill?" they were told it was included. When they replied, "But it hasn't come," the staff member responded with, "Oh, I'm sorry." It seemed like they were perhaps a part-time employee. The total amount charged also seemed to differ from the cost of the missing dish, resulting in a perplexed expression on their face. We weren't involved in any mistakes, so it was fine for us. However, the bill was not a printed receipt but a handwritten one. While we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and had a pleasant conversation with the people next to us, we left with a bit of confusion at the end.

This is a second branch that just opened a few minutes' walk from Kyoto Station. The fish grilled over an irori (traditional Japanese hearth) is truly delicious. I definitely want to visit this restaurant whenever I'm on a business trip to Kyoto.

It was for a banquet, and the fish dishes were delicious! Next time, I would like to enjoy them slowly without the rush of a banquet.

I visited this restaurant around 6 PM. It was a Wednesday, but about 80% of the seats were filled. While the flavors aren't as exquisite as those at a high-end restaurant, the food is delicious enough for a casual meal. In my personal impression, the freshness and taste of the fish would rate around an 8 out of 10 compared to a high-end restaurant, but the prices are less than a third of that. Most importantly, the staff is kind and attentive. The finishing rice dish was also tasty. Thank you for the meal!
