I recently visited a great place called "Sakana no Meshiya Tenbata" in Tennoji, and I wanted to share my experience. While it's famous for its lunch menu, the night izakaya experience is also quite impressive. The restaurant is located on the first floor of the commercial facility Via Abeno Walk in Abeno Q's Town. With its wooden frame windows, the shop has a stylish appearance that seems welcoming for women.
Upon entering, I found the place bustling, even though it was a Thursday night—no surprise for such a popular establishment. The interior features a U-shaped counter and several table seats, along with semi-private rooms allowing for a relaxed seating arrangement. The open kitchen style lets you see the cooking process, adding a fun live atmosphere.
Taking a look at the menu was quite a surprise. It has a wide range of options including sashimi, robatayaki (grilled foods), and creative homemade dishes. Here’s what I ordered:
- **Tai Negi Ranch**: Slices of tai (sea bream) served with a generous amount of ponzu and green onions. The presentation is striking, with the green onions piled high so you can hardly see the fish! The tai was thickly sliced, fresh, and had an excellent texture.
- **Sashimi Platter with 7 Types**: This included items like honmaguro (bluefin tuna), katsuo (bonito) with straw fire, shimaaji (striped jack), fresh salmon, hamo (pike eel), sawara (sawara mackerel), and kawahagi (filefish) liver. Since they source their fish directly from Osaka Central Market, the sashimi quality is excellent. The honmaguro, kawahagi liver, and straw-grilled katsuo stood out in particular. Watching the katsuo being grilled in front of me was also a treat.
- **Salmon and Walnut Millefeuille**: An Instaworthy dish that resembles a yukke (raw dish). It features the classic combination of avocado, salmon, and egg yolk, but here, the walnut paste adds a delightful texture.
- **Honmaguro Toro Takumaki**: Another must-order dish! The sweetness of the tuna belly combines beautifully with the acidity and crunch of the pickled daikon. The live preparation where they chop the tuna upon ordering is an exciting part of the experience.
- **Grilled Corn with Butter and Soy Sauce**: A classic pairing of soy sauce and butter. I was surprised by how delicious the vegetable robatayaki was amid all the seafood.
- **Crispy Large Shrimp Wrapped in Kataifi with Mushroom Sauce**: An interesting fusion dish. It features a beautifully presented large shrimp fried in kataifi; the contrast between the crispy exterior and the plump shrimp inside is delightful.
- **Grilled Eel and Zucchini Teriyaki Pizza**: Pizza with eel? I was skeptical, but this innovative dish surprisingly works well. You have to try it to believe it!
- **Live Eel and Nankou Plum Claypot Rice**: Opening the lid reveals a large tempura of eel. The combination with the plum is heavenly.
- **White Peach Cream Daifuku**: Overall, the freshness and quality of the ingredients used in the dishes stood out. From classic seafood to Italian-inspired fusion dishes, there's a wide variety to cater to different tastes. Plus, sitting at the counter lets you enjoy the live cooking, creating a unique dining experience.
If you find yourself in Tennoji, I highly recommend giving this place a visit! I’m also keen to return for lunch again.
