I found this restaurant on Tabelog and visited it. It's very close to Saga-Arashiyama Station, but it's located in a spot that's a bit tricky to find. The walls are black, making the restaurant's name somewhat hard to see. Upon entering, you immediately need to purchase your meal from the ticket machine. To the left, there are several table seats, and it seems there’s a second floor, so the place might be quite spacious.
The menu offers various options, including unajyu (grilled eel on rice) with the regular size at 5000 yen and the premium size at 6000 yen. There’s also hitsumabushi (grilled eel served with rice) priced similarly and a unique dish called unagyu, which includes beef as well, costing 6500 yen. This time, I ordered the red-and-white unajyu for 6500 yen. It’s quite rare to have grilled eel with sauce alongside white grilled eel.
After about 30 minutes, my unajyu arrived, and as I opened the lid, I wondered, "Wait? Is this the sauced unajyu?" The white grilled eel seemed a bit charred, making me think it might have sauce on it. However, upon tasting, it was indeed white grilled eel. Despite being prepared in the Kansai style, it was surprisingly dark. I thought it could retain a bit more white color.
As for the size, it was average to large, and the thickness of the eel was quite satisfying. The Kansai-style cooking made it crispy, but I expected it to be a bit softer and fluffier inside. Also, as you can see in the photo, the way the eel was arranged looked rather haphazard. The crispy texture might have caused the pieces to lose their shape, but still, I felt it could have been presented more neatly.
The white grilled eel was cut into small pieces like hitsumabushi, which could have contributed to its disordered look. Overall, there was plenty of eel, and I enjoyed being able to eat the grilled eel as well, but at this price, I must say it felt a bit expensive in terms of both quantity and quality. I wish they could improve on something. Nonetheless, I appreciated the opportunity to enjoy eel in Kyoto's Arashiyama. Thank you for the meal!
