Located near Hokkaido University, we stumbled upon this Chinese restaurant, Shenyang Hanbaiten, around 9 pm on a Friday with a group of 5. Even though they close at 10 pm, they warmly welcomed us. We ordered mapo tofu, dumplings, fried chicken, garlic shoots, shredded pork with green peppers, spring rolls, fried rice, and fried noodles. The food was prepared quickly and the taste was very satisfying. The price was also reasonable, adding three beers, the total was in the 7000 yen range. If you're looking for a great place near Hokkaido University to enjoy a meal with 4-5 people while having a few beers, this is the perfect spot! We were extremely satisfied!

"I had the 'Nira Liver Set Meal' with water dumplings. The liver in the dish was more like 'Liver Liver' than 'Nira Liver', with a strong liver flavor and a hint of chives. The water dumplings were surprisingly light. Even though I enjoyed the meal, I suspect it was over 1,500 calories. The set meal was affordable, so I ended up ordering an extra dish. I regret it..."

Located just a short walk from Kita 12-jo Station on the subway in May 2023, this Chinese restaurant called "Sanchoshoi" is run by a local couple. The exterior looks a bit worn out, with a scary number of big fish swimming in the tank at the entrance. Despite the late hour, the place was bustling with students from both Japan and abroad. The menu is extensive with a wide variety of dishes available for both lunch and dinner. The prices are very budget-friendly. We started with a draft beer, which was cheap but not the best quality. For our main dishes, we shared the mapo tofu set for 580 yen and the Sichuan-style sliced pork set for 790 yen. Both sets came with rice, salad, soup, and pickled vegetables. The mapo tofu had a mild and easy-to-eat flavor with just the right amount of spiciness and numbing sensation. It was also kid-friendly with smooth and creamy tofu. The Sichuan-style sliced pork was spicy and flavorful, with plenty of crunchy vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, and wood ear mushrooms. The course menu with all-you-can-drink option seemed tempting, but we were already full. Overall, it was a satisfying meal. Thank you for the delicious food!

In between errands, I had lunch. The city was bustling with a snow festival, so I decided to avoid it and headed to the area around Hokkaido University. I was in the mood for Chinese food, so I came to a place I had found before. There were koi fish in a tank at the entrance. When I arrived around 12:30, there were about 4 groups of customers ahead of me. The restaurant was spacious, and I hesitated on where to sit while the staff seemed unaware, so I chose an empty table. I looked at the menu, which was incredibly extensive and made it hard to decide. Eventually, I settled on wanting dumplings and ordered a set of fried rice and dumplings. After a while, I was noticed and given water. While waiting, I noticed regular customers confidently ordering the daily special. After about 10 minutes, my order arrived. The fried rice was quite substantial, served with soup, pickled vegetables, a mysterious cauliflower dish, and dumplings. I started with the fried rice, which was moist and contained minced meat, green onions, carrots, and green peas. It was tasty but started feeling greasy towards the end. The dumplings were small but juicy inside, just the right size. I couldn't figure out the purpose of the cauliflower dish. The pickled vegetables served as a palate cleanser. The egg drop soup was mild. I alternated between the dumplings and fried rice, but personally, I found the fried rice portion to be too much. Despite struggling with the extensive menu, the affordable prices and variety were appealing. I would like to try the mapo tofu next time.

The ramen and mini fried rice set for 900 yen was a good deal. I chose the soy sauce ramen, which had a strong flavor and the noodles were cooked just right. The fried rice was a bit bland for my taste, but overall the menu is affordable and filling. I would like to try other items on the menu as well. The restaurant provides pepper, soy sauce, chili oil, chopsticks, toothpicks, and napkins on the table. They also offer a pot of water and a wet towel when you sit down. The restaurant was a bit cold inside and there was no background music, so it can be quiet when there are few customers. The service was average. The restroom is located outside, which can be uncomfortable in the cold.

The name "ramen" is said to have originated from a restaurant called "Takeya Shokudo" near Hokkaido University during the pre-war era of the Taisho and Showa periods. The restaurant served authentic Chinese cuisine, which was popular among both Chinese students and Japanese locals. Today, there are still many affordable and delicious Chinese restaurants around Hokkaido University, including "Shenyang Restaurant" in Sapporo. The restaurant is run by a Chinese couple and offers authentic Chinese dishes at reasonable prices. I visited the restaurant located in Kita-ku, Sapporo, near Hokkaido University Hospital. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, including the famous "Wu Mu Ramen" (Five-Ingredient Ramen) which I wanted to try but was told it would take too long. So, I ordered the "Wu Mu Ramen (salt)" instead. The dish arrived quickly, featuring a generous amount of ingredients in a flavorful broth. The noodles were cooked just right, and the combination of flavors was delicious. Overall, it was a satisfying and affordable meal at a local Chinese restaurant.

Visited a local Chinese restaurant near Hokkaido University for the first time in September 2021. This restaurant is rare as it has a parking lot, so I went for lunch with my family on a holiday. There are many Chinese restaurants in the area around 12th to 18th streets, mostly run by people from mainland China. This restaurant is also run by a couple from mainland China. The interior of the restaurant is spacious, but I imagine it must be tough for just the two of them to manage. I ordered the "Hormone and Guts Stir-fry Set Meal" for 700 yen. It's a stir-fry of hormone and guts with cabbage, onions, and carrots. The taste is not bad, but it has a slight unique smell of hormone. The set meal also comes with salad, soup, pickled vegetables, and a small serving of almond jelly. I was pleasantly surprised that the rice was not bad at all. Many Chinese restaurants in the area have mediocre rice, but this place serves decent set meals. The portions are generous, which is convenient for the students from Hokkaido University in the area. I also tried the "Shrimp Chili Set Meal" for 850 yen. It was a bit on the sweet side, and the chili sauce was lacking in flavor. However, the variety and portion size at this restaurant are impressive. Depending on your menu selection, you might be satisfied with a fulfilling lunch here.

"Shenyang Restaurant" is a reasonably priced Chinese restaurant in the city. I visited this place with a friend for lunch, coming directly from the hospital. The restaurant is located near Hokkaido University Hospital in Kita Ward, Sapporo. We visited around 11:30 am on a weekday. The daily lunch special was priced at 630 yen, which is quite affordable. I ordered the "No. 38 Shrimp Chili Sauce Set Meal for 850 yen," while my friend ordered the "No. 16 Spicy Chicken Stir-Fry Set Meal for 750 yen." The dishes arrived in about 11 minutes, and we shared them. The shrimp in chili sauce was tasty and had about 10 decent-sized shrimp. It had a mild spiciness and was served with a side salad, egg drop soup, pickled vegetables, rice, and lychee jelly for dessert. The chicken stir-fry was also delicious, with fried chicken, onions, and carrots in a spicy sauce, served with the same sides. The prices were inclusive of tax. Overall, it was a satisfying meal at a reasonable price. I would definitely consider visiting again for a similar experience. Thank you for the delicious meal."

I found this place by chance while walking around looking for something nearby. It was just about to open, but they let me in. The entrance had a striking koi fish that seemed to look right at me. The interior of the restaurant is very spacious, suitable for banquets perhaps.
I ordered the Chicken Peanut Stir-Fry Set Meal for 750 yen, which was ready in about 10 minutes. The restaurant is run by a Chinese couple, and most items can be ordered as set meals with a wide variety to choose from. The daily special was Pork and Vegetable Stir-Fry for around 650 yen. I like ordering dishes that I can't easily make myself, so I chose the peanut stir-fry for its fragrant aroma.
The portion size was quite generous, with plenty of side dishes and rice. There were about two bowls of rice served. I was intrigued by a transparent container on the table, which turned out to be a mysterious jelly. It wasn't a sweet dessert jelly, but a refreshing and peculiar tasting jelly. The soup tasted mostly like starch, so I left it unfinished. The peanut stir-fry was very rich in flavor, almost too intense to eat on its own. It was a bit of a struggle to finish due to the strong soy sauce-based Chinese flavor, but it was packed with peanuts and other ingredients.
Perhaps this time the flavor was just unusually strong. I also wish they would wipe the tables properly and at least say a word like "Sorry for the wait" when serving the food. It felt a bit unsettling when they placed the food in front of me silently and left without a word. Overall, this place is recommended for those who are seeking generous portions without much concern for other factors. It could be a good option for a budget-friendly and filling evening banquet. Thank you for the meal!

I had been curious about this Chinese restaurant for a while. As it started snowing heavily around noon, I decided to have lunch nearby the office today, and after debating between curry and Chinese food, I settled on Chinese. The restaurant is located near a major construction company and Hokkaido University Hospital, so I thought it might be crowded, but to my surprise, it was quite empty when I arrived. I couldn't decide from the extensive menu options, so I ended up choosing the daily special lunch set, Pork and Tofu Stir-Fry Set for 630 yen. It was so affordable! Not only the daily special, but all the menu items were priced under 1000 yen, and the portions were generous. The set included the main dish, extra rice, soup, mini salad, pickles, and jelly. As for the taste, it had the flavor of a local Chinese restaurant with a gentle and mellow seasoning, making it easy to eat. There were plenty of vegetables, and although they were not raw, they still had a crunchy texture and were delicious. The party menu also seemed to offer great value, so I might consider using it for our company's next drinking party. I will definitely visit again. Thank you for the meal.

Near Kyoto University, there is a Chinese restaurant with a parking lot next to the shop. I visited in the early afternoon and it was not crowded. The menu had a wide variety of options, making it difficult to decide what to order. Eventually, I chose the chicken sweet and sour sauce set meal. The set meal was quite substantial, with a generous portion of the main dish, chicken in sweet and sour sauce, a thick egg soup with vegetables, a small serving of pickled vegetables, and a mini salad. There was also an empty glass container with very little jelly inside, which was a bit disappointing. The rice portion was good, and the chicken in sweet and sour sauce had a nice balance of sweetness and vinegar, making it delicious. Although I started to feel full towards the end, I was satisfied with the meal considering the price. I found a good restaurant, despite the limited parking. I look forward to trying other set meals in the future, maybe the spicy stir-fried chicken set meal next time. It would be more enjoyable to share the meal with family or friends rather than eating alone.

Visited for lunch on a regular day. The day before, we watched a fried rice special on TV late at night, so our minds were set on fried rice! While ramen shops also have good fried rice, the best fried rice is at a Chinese restaurant, right? The restaurant was located on the first floor of a building, no parking available so we parked at a nearby parking lot. The interior was quite spacious, with raised seating areas and a relaxing atmosphere similar to a hot spring rest area. The place was run by an older couple, with the lady bustling around the floor looking busy. It was a smoking-friendly establishment. The menu had a wide variety of options, with set meals and a great selection of individual dishes. The option to choose small side dishes was also available, making it seem like a fun place to visit for dinner. We were there for the fried rice, so I ordered a simple egg fried rice. There were other options like shrimp and crab fried rice as well. KG ordered the oil-splashed chicken set meal (which came with salad and soup) and some dumplings. The kitchen was run by the older gentleman (later found out he was Chinese) and it took quite a while for the food to be served. After waiting for about 15 minutes, the dumplings arrived, followed by the fried rice. The dumplings seemed homemade but lacked flavor. The skin had a strange smell to it. The fried rice was generously portioned, although it looked a bit plain with not much greenery. The taste was a bit bland, lacking the typical seasoning like MSG, and the bottom of the plate was soaked in oil. I sprinkled some pepper while eating, wishing for more saltiness. The slightly burnt taste from the pan was also noticeable. KG's oil-splashed chicken also arrived, and it was quite something. It was basically fried chicken drenched in soy vinegar sauce, with too much sauce making the chicken soggy. This dish didn't really make you want to eat more. Overall, I used to think that Chinese food was generally tasty, but this experience was quite disappointing. In a way, the food seemed to be made without using artificial seasonings, making it somewhat healthier, but I probably won't be returning. Thank you for the meal.

Today, a customer desired Chinese food, so we went to Shenyang Restaurant on the north side of Hokkaido University multiple times. It's always a struggle to decide what to eat because they have a huge menu! But since we're both greedy, we usually go for set meals. The customer ordered the Dan Dan noodles and fried rice set, while I had the five-flavor ramen and fried rice set. The first time I tried the five-flavor ramen with soy sauce, it was light and delicious. I wonder when I'll be able to try all the dishes on the menu. Maybe it's a goal before retirement, haha.

"I had the Shrimp Fried Rice Set with Stir-Fried Pork and Green Peppers. The fried rice was moist and had a gentle flavor, while the stir-fried pork and green peppers were slightly salty, creating a perfect balance of flavors. Delicious!"

"I had the Mapo Tofu set meal. It cost 580 yen. It's cheap and delicious! I imagined it would be very spicy because of the scent of the sansho pepper when it was served, but it wasn't actually spicy. Next time, I'll try getting extra servings of the side dishes!"
