I went with a friend who loves BBQ to Ogawa Shoten, a hormone (offal) meat shop located about a 10-minute walk from JR Tennoji Station. Since it’s close to the station, we arrived without getting lost. From the outside, we could see two-person tables and counter seats, and I heard there’s also a second floor.
Once we sat down, I noticed many bottles of high-quality ginseng in front of us. I was really curious, but first, we ordered a beer. There’s nothing better than a beer after work! Although it was getting cooler outside, I quickly downed a cold beer. Then, we carefully looked over the menu, which featured the restaurant's recommended dishes. We decided to start with the rich and flavorful salted motsu (offal) stew and the melt-in-your-mouth trotters.
It was my first time trying salted motsu stew, as it’s usually made with a lot of miso. The salted version was light and refreshing, with different kinds of motsu that were very tender. Even my friend, who usually doesn’t eat motsu, praised it for being delicious. The ingredients are high-quality, and it truly was an amazing dish.
The trotters were also simmered for six hours and were incredibly tender—so soft you could say they were almost jelly-like. The flavor was light, and you could eat as much as you wanted. They’re full of collagen, making them a hit with the ladies! They slide right off the bone, making them easy to eat. I even told the owner that I would love to have rice or somen noodles in the soup of the salted motsu stew and trotters. I really wanted to order rice, but I held back since I wanted to try many other dishes this time. I’ll save that for next time!
Next, we had something I love—fresh heart meat. It was really thick and had no unpleasant smell, allowing us to enjoy it endlessly. My friend also loved it and was eating a lot. Eating it with chopped green onions and angled onions elevated the flavors even more.
We then decided to get some vegetables, so we ordered bean sprout namul, which was a nice palate cleanser. We switched our drink to a small kettle of makkoli since drinking too much beer fills our stomachs quickly. A cute kettle arrived, giving off a nostalgic Showa vibe, reminding me of my grandfather placing a kettle filled with water on an oil stove to make warm sake. It was lovely. Makkoli was delicious! If we had more people, a larger kettle would be great.
For the meats, we ordered salted tongue and tenderloin. The salted tongue was delicious and disappeared quickly. The tenderloin was incredibly soft and very easy to eat. Then we had the “Ogawa Genki Harami” which is thickly marinated in garlic, green onions, and onions, making it great to eat without further cooking. The garlic packed a punch, really boosting our energy and making fatigue melt away. The flavor was addictive, and it paired well with drinks.
Next, we couldn’t resist ordering the ‘negishio pipe’ from the daily specials. When I asked what it was, I learned it was black pork’s blood vessels. It was fascinating! These blood vessels were really thick, with a crunchy texture that was delicious. I grilled them with the included negi (green onions) for added flavor. If you like crunchy textures, you should definitely try this.
Then we enjoyed the ‘phantom liver.’ I’m a big fan of liver, and this one was great. Just lightly grilled, it was fluffy and had no odor. Even those who usually dislike liver could probably enjoy this!
To finish off, I ordered another round of salted tongue. Clearly, I can’t get enough of it! We ended the meal with vanilla ice cream topped with black syrup and kinako (roasted soybean flour), which tasted amazing after eating all that meat.
This time, our total bill was just under 9,000 yen. Considering how much we ate and drank, it was incredibly cheap. It’s a great place for anyone trying hormone dishes for the first time. I’d love to try their homemade ginseng liquor next time. The owner and staff were friendly, making it a great spot even if you go alone! Thank you for the meal!
