August 20, 2017: A 3-day bus tour of the Shiretoko Peninsula!! On the first day, we stayed at Kawayu Onsen - a great hotel with delicious food. After dinner, we explored the hot spring town and my husband had planned for us to visit the Taiho Sumo Memorial Hall with a discount coupon we got from the hotel. The town had souvenir shops, izakayas, and snack bars, but it wasn't too crowded. The temperature that night was around 16°C, with warm air. We entered the memorial hall with a 10% discount on the entrance fee of 420 yen. We were the only customers there, so the electricity was on low and sumo music was playing, creating a sumo atmosphere. We walked around the hall, seeing sumo wrestlers I recognized from the past and the championship cups. It was a museum filled with the love for sumo, family, and hometown. Before leaving, we bought some Taiho Senbei, which were traditional rice crackers shaped like a mawashi (sumo belt) and probably had Taiho's name written by former Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi. The crackers had a classic taste and were a bit moist. As we left, the sumo music stopped playing. If you love sumo, I recommend visiting this place!
