I just got back from a movie tonight. When I watch a film at TOHO Nihonbashi, it's a routine to eat at one of the restaurants in COREDO using the ticket stub discount. At TOHO Hibiya, I usually dine at the restaurant floor of Shantie after a movie, and when it comes to TOHO Shibuya, I have a routine of heading to a gyoza shop in the alley behind it, and since it’s been a while since I watched a movie in Shibuya, I took that familiar turn this time. I used to frequent this area, specifically the backstreets by Shibuya Mark City on the Dogenzaka side, but it changed dramatically after the COVID-19 pandemic, and I was surprised to find that almost everything besides the pachinko parlor had transformed. Even more astonishing was that a new gyoza shop had opened right next door in my beloved gyoza area, which surely attracts more gyoza lovers.
Since it was still bright after the movie, around 4 PM, and without a reservation, I could get in easily. Even though they had a lunch menu board, the "godly foam" poster caught my eye! I noticed a "golden gyoza"?! A 2nd location?! I also saw the "Golden Gyoza Sakaba Shibuya 1st Store" nearby. From the outside, it looked like a three-story building, but it actually had three levels: basement, middle, and second floors. The bright interior was filled with gyoza characters and illustrations, making it feel like a theme park for gyoza lovers.
Ordering was done via a touch panel, and I went for the “godly foam,” but I realized the price wasn't 199 yen! It turns out, happy hour is only on weekdays, and since it was during the Obon holidays, it counted as a holiday. A bit disappointing, but I continued with my order, which included special grilled gyoza, iron skillet stick gyoza, succulent shrimp boiled gyoza, shark fin gyoza, and soup dumplings… they were all fantastic and delicious! There were also menu items that involved dipping the gyoza in sauces, but we were quite full with this selection.
As for appetizers and other Chinese dishes, we tried meat and bean sprouts, long yam with wasabi soy sauce, succulent shrimp and egg stir-fry, salt-seasoned bean sprouts stir-fry, beef skirt steak and enoki mushrooms in garlic soy sauce… all of these dishes were also hits and delicious. Due to the location, around 6 PM, the place was packed with groups of young people and inbound customers, but inside was spacious with high ceilings. Although there were some smokers, I didn’t notice any unpleasant smoke smell. I think the cleanliness of the restaurant is what attracted even groups of women. I would definitely recommend this place to my gyoza-loving female friends, and I look forward to coming back here after a movie again.
