Thanks to the After 5 Stars team, I was able to take a quick day trip to Kansai. During the summer, due to heat management, the time for paddocks was shortened, and my schedule didn’t match up, so it had been since the end of June since I was last in Kansai. I visited Omiwa Shrine, and with less than two hours until the opening of Sonoda Racecourse, I realized that considering the travel time, my planned restaurant might be a bit rushed. Last time I visited Osaka, I was impressed by the lunch specials at Sukiyaki Fujimoto, which included a Japanese beef steak and a beef sukiyaki bowl, as well as a Japanese pork shabu-shabu set (with 1.5 times the meat). Could I make it there in time? I stopped by before 12:00 on Friday. Luckily, I was seated at a two-person counter right away, which felt promising. It seems more customers have increased since my last visit, and getting in without a wait was super lucky. My husband ordered the Japanese pork shabu-shabu set, while I indulged in the ultimate challenge with the weekday lunch limited Japanese beef sukiyaki set, also at 1.5 times the meat. My husband, who did the driving, took a break with a beer, and since it was the busiest time, our dishes arrived in about 10 minutes. The vegetables for the pork shabu-shabu included finely sliced green onions, mizuna, enoki mushrooms, tofu, kudzu noodles, and red leaf-shaped wheat gluten on top of yuba. I apologize for reusing an earlier photo, but I didn’t seem to have the yomofu this time. For the sukiyaki, beneath the meat were onions, white leeks, cabbage, mizuna, enoki mushrooms, tofu, dried wheat gluten, red leaf-shaped wheat gluten, yuba, and udon already included. I think sukiyaki in Kansai often has a sharp flavor from soy sauce and sugar, but Fujimoto's version has a comforting taste rich in broth. Dipped in the rich egg, it was incredibly delicious. The sauce was right on target compared to any sukiyaki I’ve had before, and the udon and wheat gluten soaked in broth were delightful. The pork shabu-shabu also had a wonderful soup balance, and I looked forward to enjoying the broth after finishing everything. Next time, I’ll probably have to wait in line to get in. Thank you for the quick and delicious lunch!
