In a forest by Lake Kussharo, there is a cozy pension with a homely and tranquil atmosphere. This area is full of individually-run accommodations due to its abundant hot springs, making it quite enjoyable. Among them, this pension has been in operation for about 20 years, boasting a retro Western-style architecture and meals. The food features local seasonal ingredients and Hokkaido products, such as the flavorful fiddlehead ferns we had during our visit. The soup was hearty and comforting, and the rice, served in a traditional wooden tub, was locally grown and delicious. The main dishes like cherry salmon, cheese, and pork had a mild and satisfying taste suitable for everyone. The homemade ice cream for dessert was a nice touch. We enjoyed our meals in the dining room facing the terrace, where we could watch birds outside the window, adding a touch of amusement. The breakfast, also Western-style, included homemade bread and a moderate selection of dishes. The dishes were served in retro Western-style plates with the pension's mushroom logo, adding a nostalgic charm. The bath facilities included separate indoor baths for men and women, as well as a private outdoor bath located about a minute's walk away. The hot spring water is sodium-hydrogen carbonate, with a temperature of 70.2°C, pH 6.6, and powered by natural spring water. The outdoor bath had a rustic charm, blending well with the surrounding forest. However, due to potential overflow of hot spring water, soap and detergent were not allowed in the outdoor bath, but were provided in the indoor baths. The changing rooms also had a washing machine available for guests to use for free. While the pension does not offer a view of the lake due to its location on the forest side of the road, it is within walking distance for a pleasant stroll. The area also has a variety of different hot springs with unique qualities, making it ideal for hot spring hopping. If you prefer a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere closer to a guesthouse rather than a traditional inn, this place is highly recommended. Thank you for your hospitality. One night with two meals costs around 9,000 yen.
