This is a pension located in the Potato Republic at Pension Mura in Niseko Annupuri Ski Resort, which is our favorite and regular accommodation. Unlike other pensions that serve French or Western cuisine, this place offers delicious Japanese sake paired with a mix of Japanese and Western dishes. What's more, the sake is sold at cost price. In 2006, when our family went skiing, the owner of the pension greeted us at Niseko Station, which we really appreciated. The pension also offers a pre-dinner service. While there are many hot springs in Niseko, they provide shuttle service to your preferred hot spring.
Here is a description of the dinner menu for the first night, where we were the only family staying:
- Pre-dinner sake: Shaka Rika
- Ikura and mushroom salad with grated daikon
- Yacon kinpira
- Chawanmushi (savory egg custard)
- Salmon chan-chan yaki in foil
- Herb-grilled chicken thigh with curry cream sauce
- Owner's hand-made soba
- Rice
- Tofu and wakame miso soup
- Pickles: Melon miso pickles
- Dessert: Homemade ice cream with chocolate sauce
The pre-dinner sake "Shaka Rika" is a frozen sake from a Hokkaido sake brewery, which has a sweet and sour taste and low alcohol content. The dishes like ikura salad and yacon kinpira are perfect accompaniments to sake. The chawanmushi served in a coffee cup is a favorite among children. The salmon chan-chan yaki uses thick Shiitake mushrooms, likely locally sourced from a farm in Shimamaki Village. The herb-grilled chicken with curry cream sauce is a Western-style dish that complements the sake well. The owner's hand-made soba is a special menu item that is only served when there are few guests. The rice and miso are made from carefully selected ingredients, including pesticide-free rice and additive-free miso. The pickles made from unripe melons are surprising but delicious. The dessert of homemade ice cream with chocolate sauce was also delightful. The pension offers a variety of Japanese sake selected by the owner, stored in a cooler.
