Today's weekday lunch was finally realized at a restaurant I had been wanting to visit for a while. This restaurant has irregular closing days, with specific days off each month. I made the mistake of visiting last time without knowing this and was met with disappointment. I'm not foolish enough to make the same mistake again. I saw on Twitter that "Taniguchi Curry in FOLK old book store is open for business" so I decided to visit! As the name suggests, this restaurant is actually a curry shop that operates by renting space in an old book store. I've always loved old book stores, even though there are fewer of them now. I used to spend a lot of time reading books on quantum mechanics... (Just kidding, I only read adult books! (laughs)) Reflecting on those nostalgic academic days, I entered the store... The interior had a wooden theme, which made me feel really comfortable. As I was getting ready to enjoy my curry, I also felt a scholarly vibe. The menu offered three items: Chicken Curry - 900 yen Seafood Curry - 1,000 yen (limited to 10 servings) Spicy Pork Belly Keema Curry - 1,000 yen (limited to 20 servings) You could choose the level of spiciness from mild, slightly spicy, spicy, and very spicy, with a note saying that even the mild option was quite spicy. The Seafood Curry was already sold out, but I had already decided what to order. Today, I ordered the Spicy Pork Belly Keema Curry for 1,000 yen with a level of spiciness set to "spicy". By the way, I wonder which is spicier between "mild" and "slightly spicy"? (laughs) The food was served within 5 minutes of ordering. So fast! It was as quick as a chain restaurant. These types of spiced curry places usually take a while to serve, so this speed was impressive. The visual presentation of the curry was appealing, with a generous amount of sauce covering the saffron rice. The ratio of sauce to rice was about 3:1, which was great for someone like me who loves sauce. I usually end up with leftover rice when I order extra sauce at Indian curry restaurants. This curry had a ratio of about 7:1, which was perfect for me. Let's dig in! The unique blend of spices and the perfect level of spiciness in this curry were really enjoyable. It had a good kick to it. I'm trying to stay cool now, but I can feel the heat building up in my stomach. However, curry needs to have that level of spiciness. The ingredients included pork belly, as well as pumpkin, mushrooms, and an interesting addition of finely chopped tofu. There were also potato fries on top of the saffron rice for a nice touch. The side dish was pickled turnips. I devoured the curry in one go, like a long continuous shot in a movie. North Osaka is a fierce battleground for spice lovers, and this curry definitely lived up to the high standards. I really enjoyed this curry, but as expected, I felt some stomach pain afterwards. I quickly bought some yogurt to soothe my stomach. Pathetic... I really am retired from spicy foods. I'll be sending out invitations to my retirement ceremony, so please join me. (laughs)
