In mid-June, on the return trip from the third overnight stay in Hakodate, I decided to stop by "Koiya" at Junna-numa, which I had been curious about for a while, to try their famous carp dishes. The restaurant is located along Route 5, about 0.5 km on the left side after passing the intersection of Route 43 from Onuma Park towards Sapporo. We parked in the spacious parking lot, entered the restaurant, and ordered "Koi no arai (carp sashimi) for two." The staff asked if we wanted the carp scales, and of course we said yes! We also purchased two other smelt products and packed them in a foam box with ice. After enjoying a delicious "hamachanpon" in Naga-wanbe, I arrived home a bit later than my wife who had taken a different route. While my wife took a bath, I prepared the carp scales, and we had a satisfying dinner. The carp sashimi was served with a delicious mustard vinegar miso sauce, which enhanced the sweetness of the carp without any fishy smell. My wife, who is not a fan of raw fish, happily finished her portion. As for the carp scales, I followed the recipe and cooked them with carp, water, and miso, resulting in a rich and tasty dish. We froze half of the scales and enjoyed them a week later, finding them equally delicious. Although I have only tried carp dishes a few times, I have also enjoyed other fish from the carp family, such as Honmoroko, Ugui, and Sogyo, which all have a unique sweetness to their meat. Next time I pass by Junna-numa, I might buy some carp scales to try frying them. I just love carp! It was a delicious meal. Bon appétit!
