During a bike trip, I got caught in the rain and found myself at Toyora Station feeling lost. Next to the station, I discovered a small izakaya and decided to give it a try. Inside, I learned that it's a place where the local superstar Daisuke Naito often visits, and his signed posters are subtly displayed with pride. I asked for a couple of dishes and a beer to pass the time while waiting for the train, but ended up sampling various dishes made with local ingredients. The menu mainly consists of home-cooked meals using local produce, and the friendly master caters mostly to locals. The prices are really reasonable, and the hospitality of the couple running the place is top-notch. This is not a tourist-oriented restaurant serving specialty dishes, but rather a heartwarming and lovely spot for those who enjoy interacting with locals.
Update: I revisited the place last year and was warmly welcomed with a familiar recognition. Even though it was my second visit, they treated me like a regular customer. The "kaasan" even let me taste the freshly caught seafood brought by a fisherman for dinner, just like the first time. For me, without a doubt, this is the number one dining spot in Hokkaido. After indulging in a hearty meal, I was waiting for the train on the platform when the master came running towards me, panting. He had noticed that I had forgotten my helmet and rushed to deliver it to me before the train arrived. This place is definitely the best!
