This is a small pastry shop in the town of Shikari, where I stopped by to replenish my sweet tooth. Inside the shop, there were display cases filled with various cakes and long-lasting sweets that could also be used as souvenirs. Despite the recent rise in ingredient prices, the cakes here seemed to be more affordable compared to other stores. The cream puff, priced at 130 yen, felt surprisingly light in my hand. The cream inside was mildly sweet and the amount seemed a bit less. The Ezo deer monaka, priced at 115 yen, contained smooth red bean paste. The Ezo deer shape was intricately designed, with horns and patterns, resembling a silhouette of a deer bending its knees. When I bit into it, it reminded me of the scene from "Princess Mononoke" where the head of the forest spirit was cut off. The white snake cookie, priced at 110 yen, was a thin cookie with almonds and pumpkin seeds, sandwiched with cream, providing a satisfying crunch. I looked up why it was called white snake and found a legend about a goddess accompanied by a white snake who appeared during a severe famine in the Tokachi region, instructing the indigenous people to survive by eating the white-spotted char from Lake Nukabira. Many lives were saved thanks to this legend. According to information I found online, the shop owner used to work for Yagizuki before retiring and opening this shop. It was a pastry shop in the town that offered a variety of cakes and traditional Japanese sweets.
