When it comes to Hokkaido, people often think of Genghis Khan (grilled mutton). However, I heard that most of the sheep meat served in restaurants in the prefecture is imported. In the town of Shibetsu, known as the "sheep town," you can enjoy high-quality Suffolk sheep meat, a breed with black faces and limbs that served as the model for the famous sheep Shaun. This breed, known as "Shibetsu Suffolk," is a rare brand of meat in Hokkaido. It is said to be domestically produced sheep meat, which raises expectations. The special feature of the sauce is that it is a "ginger sauce." Shibetsu is a quiet town even in the central area with few restaurants. I decided to have dinner here by making use of a search site and finding a place that handles Shibetsu Suffolk. I called to confirm and was told that there were available seats after the Obon holiday. I ordered the Shibetsu Suffolk set recommended by the owner, priced at 3,000 yen, Shibetsu Suffolk (additional order) for 890 yen, and Kembuchi leek fried rice for 600 yen. A Genghis Khan pot was placed on a table burner. Although it was labeled as serving 3 people, it seemed a bit small for 2 people. I decided to eat it before it got too cooked. The meat had a lot of chewiness and the flavor spread in my mouth as I chewed. It was less gamey than the usual sheep meat and easy to eat. The fatty parts were sweet and very delicious. I wish there were more vegetables. The ginger sauce I was looking forward to was refreshing and matched well with the meat, but I think it was tube-grated ginger... I'm not a big fan of it, so I would have preferred fresh grated ginger. The chewiness, flavor, and aroma were completely different from the sheep meat I'm used to eating. Shibetsu Suffolk, which is hard to come by, is a must-try. Although this review is for a different restaurant, there are specialty shops in Sapporo that offer Shibetsu Suffolk. Experience the unique Shibetsu Suffolk once ♫

★KG★ I visited around 9:00 p.m. on Friday. I called ahead to confirm if I could enter, and they said, "We may not have much left at this time, but you can come in." The restaurant is located right behind a newly opened roadside station, with parking available in front of the store. They were out of yakitori and hormone dishes, but they could serve Suffolk lamb set. I wanted to try the Suffolk lamb, so I felt lucky. The amount of Suffolk lamb was priced at 3,000 yen, which I thought was reasonable. We started grilling the lamb on the Teflon Mongolian hot pot on the cassette stove. The lamb had a unique flavor and texture, with a dense volume of lean meat that was delicious. Suffolk lamb is a rare find even in Sapporo, so it was worth visiting Shibetsu for it. We also tried the regular seasoned Mongolian mutton afterwards, but the quality of the meat was completely different. Suffolk lamb is truly amazing. We arrived late that day, so we missed out on the limited menu items such as hormone dishes, Yukkejang ramen, and yakitori, which all looked delicious in the photos. I definitely want to visit earlier next time and try everything I missed.
