I wanted to enjoy a tasty grilled fish set meal at "High-End Brand Dried Fish Ginza Bansuke," located in Takashimaya Times Square, Shinjuku. The original branch is in Ginza, and I initially planned to go there, but I opted for the closer location since it’s also inside Takashimaya. By the way, it's on the 14th floor. The restaurant boldly proclaims itself as a high-end brand for dried fish, which makes me think they didn’t necessarily need to advertise that, but who knows.
Since it’s on the 14th floor, the view is excellent. It’s quite amusing to enjoy a set meal with such a nice scenery. The interior isn’t particularly luxurious, but the spacious seating that matches the prices adds to a comfortable atmosphere. I was torn between choices, but ultimately went for my favorite, the grilled "toroshima-hokke" dried fish set, while my companion was drawn to a limited time offer: the "domestic red sea bream aged with kelp, grilled fish set."
When our meals arrived, they resembled a traditional Japanese inn breakfast, featuring a rolled omelet, tuna, five small dishes, a tea rice set, and a sweet treat — everything was very appealing, and I would say even better than the photos. The miso soup was generously filled with radish and had a refined flavor, probably made with Shinshu miso. It was really delicious. The rolled omelet was on the sweeter side, which isn't to my taste, so I passed it to my companion, but the tuna was flavorful without any unpleasant smell, so that was pleasing.
As for the fish, while it was a dried fish, it was somewhat lacking in saltiness and had a soft flavor. I added some grated daikon with soy sauce to enhance the saltiness, but I think fish would taste better with a solid base flavor to start with. My companion’s sea bream didn’t have much of a kelp flavor, but it was grilled nicely and quite tasty, especially since sea bream pairs perfectly with tea rice, it outshined my hokke.
Also, the portion of rice provided initially was decent for me, so I didn’t finish it, but there was a generous offer of unlimited refills, which felt very nice. While there were aspects lacking in the typical essence of dried fish, the set meal paired with the view from the 14th floor of Takashimaya made it worthwhile. They also thoughtfully provided additional broth for the tea rice and cold barley tea, which felt like it matched the price point. I’d like to try the "torokin-ki" next time. Thank you for the meal!
