Ferry restaurant on the way from Niigata to Tomakomai. I don't usually use it unless I really want to eat something, but I had to go in this time because I couldn't use up the travel support coupon. The set meal with 3 pieces of thinly sliced pork cutlets and rice costs 950 yen, with an extra 50 yen for a large serving. The only thing I can praise is that the large serving is only 50 yen more. Of course, it's ferry food, so I guess this is as good as it gets. The taste and satisfaction are on par with a convenience store bento box that costs around 550 yen. I wish they would at least reheat the rice. It's not freshly cooked, so it's lukewarm. So, if you just want to fill your stomach, it's better to buy something from a convenience store beforehand.

Inside the car ferry heading back to Niigata from Tomakomai on the Shin Nihonkai Ferry. It's slightly different from the ship on the way here, but overall it's the same vibe. Enjoying a special beef stew for 700 yen and mapo tofu for 400 yen while drinking beer. The beef stew has tender meat and well-cooked potatoes. The mapo tofu is on the sweeter side with a slightly thick texture. It's not very spicy, making it suitable for all ages from elderly to children. The portion size is small, making it a good amount as a beer snack.

When traveling in Tohoku in April 2015, I took a ferry from Tomakomai East Port to Akita Port. The ferry departed at night and arrived in the morning, which was convenient. It felt nice to sleep in a private room instead of a hotel and wake up at the destination. The restaurant on the ferry was like a staff cafeteria, where you pick dishes on a tray and pay at the register. There were various dishes available, and on this day, I had Zangi and crab balls as the main dishes, along with side dishes and beer. The taste was honestly average, nothing special, but the added value of dining on a ship lifted the mood. That's the charm of a ferry trip. If it weren't for COVID, I would have been traveling in Tohoku again this year. What a shame.

I used the ferry from Tomakomai to Akita. The inside of the ferry is really clean and impressive, with a well-stocked shop, a large bath, and even a game center. I was quite surprised. Inside the ferry, there was a restaurant called "Tahiti." You choose the items from the display case and pay at the end, similar to "Handaya." This time, I tried the recommended "Special Beef Stew" for ¥700 and rice for ¥200. The beef wasn't as tender as I expected, but the demi-glace sauce was rich and the beef stew was delicious. You can enjoy good food even on a ferry. Another restaurant on board offers reservation-only course menus as well. Impressive.

I had lunch at the restaurant on the ferry heading from Niigata to Tomakomai. They had a special August limited menu called "Milky Fair" featuring dishes made with Hokkaido ingredients. I ordered the "Milky Curry" (800 yen including tax). It came with Hokkaido baby scallops and corn on the side, which you mix into the curry and then top with fresh milk. It was a self-service style meal with plenty of scallops and corn, although the balance with the curry was a bit off. The curry itself had a traditional taste and was decent for the price. Thank you for the meal.

This is Otaru! I came here for work and decided to have lunch quickly at the usual ferry terminal. I'm definitely not involved in smuggling. There are various menu options and a parking lot, so when I'm short on time, I always come here. Having lunch while looking at the sea is really nice! It seems like the boss saw me with the company people as we entered the building from the parking lot. I didn't notice the boss, but it seems like he was here. It's a bit suspicious, but I can't investigate further (・_・; (laughs) Even though we've only met once, it's amazing how he recognized me, right? (laughs) Now, let's have lunch. I was in the mood for some Ankake Yakisoba that day ^_^ It has become a specialty of Otaru now. In the past, Otaru was known for sushi, panju, naruto's fried chicken, sweets, herring, and Western food, but when did Ankake Yakisoba become popular? The dish arrived in about 10 minutes. Well, it's just delicious. It's well-balanced as Ankake Yakisoba. But because it's so well put together, it lacks a unique feature. It needs a little more creativity to become a local specialty! I've tried quite a few dishes, but next, I will challenge a new menu item! Thank you for the meal ^_^

Today's lunch will be at the restaurant "Tahiti" on the New Japan Sea Ferry. We departed from Otaru Port at 10:30 in the morning and will arrive at Niigata Port at 6:00 the next morning. It's a long boat trip, so we can drink plenty. The restaurant is cafeteria-style. I selected a draft beer, salted fish roe, and surf clam curry. The beer is Kirin Ichiban Shibori draft. Beer on a ship is exceptional. I chose the salted fish roe somewhat randomly. Of course, it's not homemade. I topped the common curry with surf clams. Just like Marutoma, you have to simmer the surf clams until their umami comes out. For dinner, we had Genghis Khan outdoors. Thank you for the meal! I'm on board the Otaru to Niigata route after a long time. The interior of the ship has changed quite a bit since I last rode it. In terms of restaurants, it seems like there has been a significant reduction in space compared to when the ship first started operating. This time, I only used it during dinner time. There weren't many options, but I chose something that seemed unique to this place. I ordered the crab and herring parent and child rice bowl, large size. It cost 1250 yen including tax, while the regular size is 1200 yen. Feeling like it wasn't quite enough, I also chose the boiled whelk. It cost 500 yen, which was a good price. The whelk dish was prepared and paid for at the counter, while the rice bowl was ordered with a ticket and brought to the table. It took about 10 minutes for the dishes to be ready. Comparing it to the regular size, the rice in the large size seemed to be about 1 cm thicker. The crab chowder that came with it had a good amount of crab in it. The rice bowl had crab laid on top of the rice, with herring cut and placed on top. In the middle of the bowl, there was some roe. The herring wasn't raw as I had thought, but rather marinated in vinegar. It was a unique bowl, and although it wasn't incredibly delicious, it was still tasty. The whelk dish had large pieces of whelk, providing a satisfying chewiness. It might have been better if it was grilled instead of boiled, as it lacked warmth.
