My wife's friend told me that on TV, Kato Hiroshi from Otaru said, "When you go to Otaru, you have to try the Zangi at Narutoshi!" I looked it up and found out that it's located inside Otaru Station. I arrived at Otaru Station early to cheer on my son who is participating in the Hokkaido Marathon and decided to look around the station. I found it and decided to try one piece of Zangi for 160 yen. It was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, delicious! Apparently, the difference between Karaage and Zangi is that Zangi has a stronger flavor. I wanted a beer.

I have used Otaru Station many times, and I remember seeing the same restaurant every time. As many people may know, there is a branch of a famous Hokkaido chicken dish restaurant inside Otaru Station. It is a takeout-only shop, but I decided to buy one piece of zangi and enjoy it on the train. Although it wasn't freshly fried, it was well insulated and the meat was tender with a delicious salt-based seasoning. Maybe the lack of juiciness is due to pre-cooking or to make it easier to eat on the train. They also provide wet wipes, so it's recommended to enjoy it on the train without making a mess. Thank you for the meal. Visit date: 3/21/90 items.

I bought zangi and half-body fried chicken. Both were not freshly fried, I think. The zangi had a strong ginger flavor, different from the popular Nakatsu Karaage, and it was delicious in its own way. However, it seemed like the ginger was too strong for young children. Families on vacation should be cautious. The half-body fried chicken could use more salt and spices for better flavor.

On June 17, 2022 (Fri), revisiting [Early Summer Hokkaido Trip 2022 Day 2], "Otaru Narutoya Otaru Station Front Store" located inside Otaru Station is a takeout-only shop. It is nestled in a corner of a souvenir shop, but it exudes a nice aroma throughout the station, making its presence felt. When you think of "Otaru Narutoya Otaru Station Front Store," the popular items like half-fried young chicken and zangi come to mind. It's convenient to be able to purchase these popular products at the station without having to go to the main store, "Otaru Narutoya Asari Main Store," which is a bit further from Otaru Station.

On the second day of my train journey, I traveled around the Hakodate Main Line and arrived in Otaru. Along the way, I passed by a local train from Otaru to Niseko, filled with students. It's nice to see so many people using the train, I hope it continues to thrive! That brings me to "Otaru Narutoya Otaru Ekimae Store." I had a 32-minute layover at Otaru Station. Since it was too short to explore the city, I visited this place inside the station. Here, you can buy zangi starting from just one piece. I bought two for a light snack. Zangi costs 130 yen per piece. The unique soy sauce flavor from Narutoya is irresistible. Although they were not freshly fried, the meat was juicy and delicious. I enjoyed them on a bench at the station. As the journey nears its end, my reviews may become more rushed, but it's not because I'm getting lazy (laughs). Day 2: Kutchan → Otaru Local train 15:18 Kutchan departure, 16:28 Otaru arrival Operating distance: 59.2 km Regular fare: 1290 yen Total travel time: 7 hours 23 minutes, Total operating distance: 461.4 km, Total fare: 15,420 yen

[Summary] ★3.4 (Balanced Type) - Takeout Zangi 130 - Quickly grabbed a takeout while waiting in line at a sushi shop. The location is very convenient.
[Comment] - Upon arriving in Otaru, I decided to try a standing sushi restaurant inside the train station, but it seemed quite popular and I would have to wait. I noticed this takeout shop nearby and decided to get something from there. - I tried the Zangi (deep-fried chicken) for 130 yen, which was juicy and satisfying. The location is almost as good as the sushi restaurant. As a quick meal option in Otaru, this shop may be less crowded and more convenient (not to mention cheaper). It's good to have this as an option, depending on your preference.
[Rating Point Image] ★4.5 and above: Legendary! (Willing to travel just to eat here/ Would use it every day) ★4.4: Impressive! (Would go out of my way to eat here) ★3.9: Very satisfied! (Would prioritize using it when nearby) ★3.4: Fairly satisfied. (Consider it as an option for a meal) ★2.9: Just okay. ★2.4 and below: Hmm... (Please check the profile for more details)

In June 2020, I visited the "Otaru Narutoya" branch located in a corner of "Tarushe" inside Otaru Station for the first time. There are two shops in Otaru, "Wakadori Jidai Otaru Naruto Honten" and "Otaru Narutoya," both of which are said to be from the same lineage of the founder, but there is no hostile relationship like "original" or "main branch," rather a friendly relationship. However, "Otaru Narutoya" actively expands its stores not only in Otaru but also in other cities such as Asahikawa and Obihiro. I bought the "zangi" for 130 yen, which is actually famous for its "half-fried chicken," but I decided to try the "zangi" this time. The piece was quite large and tasted really delicious. I took it home, but it would be nice to enjoy it as a snack while strolling around Otaru during sightseeing.

Mrs. Kami goes on a leisurely bus trip on a work Sunday. First, she purchases a "JR Hokkaido Bus One-Day Pass @ 800 yen" (available at JR bus sales offices or on board) which allows her to ride all local JR bus lines in the city and nearby areas for a whole day. Although the routes are limited in the northern, eastern, and southern areas, she can also travel to places like Otaru, Shin-Sapporo, and Kitahiroshima without using the express bus. She takes a bus in the 7 o'clock hour to head to Miyanosawa Bus Terminal, where she transfers to a slow bus to Otaru. While the express bus takes less than 40 minutes, the slow bus ride is about an hour. She arrives in Otaru a little after 9 o'clock and goes to various cafes and shops such as "Panyu," "Natural Ramen Restaurant Asahoro," "Fruits Papa & Juicy Mama," and "Otaru Narutoya." She also buys some "karaage" (fried chicken) from a cooking booth inside the local souvenir shop "Tarushe." She enjoys one piece of the warm and crispy karaage on a chair in the station waiting area, savoring its juicy and flavorful goodness. She believes that like the pastries, the karaage must be eaten fresh to truly appreciate its quality. She takes two pieces home for Mrs. Kami's dinner, knowing that reheating them in the microwave wouldn't do them justice. The local bus back to Sapporo leaves in the 11 o'clock hour, with the next one not until after 1 o'clock. For now, she takes a bus back to Miyanosawa to return to Sapporo.

At Naruto in Otaru Station, you can buy freshly fried croquettes from just one piece, so even if you're not hungry, you end up buying them. After having a drink and a bite at the nearby Burger King, I bought about two croquettes here. They were completely freshly fried that day. The problem was where to eat them, as I wanted to avoid a place where the smell would linger. Since I was going to travel by JR train afterwards, I decided to eat them on the platform because of the good ventilation. However, the train I was supposed to board was already on the platform and getting crowded, so I had no choice but to board. I thought it would be better to endure the smell spreading around, but I couldn't resist the freshly fried croquettes. So, I shamelessly ate them. Oh, they were really delicious. I should have bought a can of Ruby to go with them. Over 90% of the people around me were inbound tourists, so no one noticed me eating. That was good, I'm glad. (↑ The more shameless a person is, the more they have a sense of shame.) Thank you for the meal.

Zangi purchased at the souvenir shop at Otaru Station. It's a famous store from Naruto. The half-fried version is well-known, but I had it over 10 years ago and it was too much. Zangi can be purchased individually, so I ended up buying one.
Zangi: The large size with a crispy surface is typical of Naruto. It has a good amount of meat fat and juiciness as if it was fried at a high temperature. It's definitely Chinese-style. Otaru is all about Chinese food. It's a shame that there is a lingering smell in the meat quality. Maybe it's unavoidable due to the good cost performance. It seems they have expanded to Shibuya, so I would like to savor it more. It's so cold! Thank you for the meal.

When heading towards Sapporo from Otaru Station, there was quite a wait, so I revisited a shop in the station's souvenir corner. I heard they recently opened a shop in Gotanda, Tokyo, but I still crave their products from the original Otaru store. This time, I bought two pieces of Zangi for takeout. I enjoyed them in the waiting area inside the station. The deep-fried food is always delicious and freshly fried, which makes it tasty. Otaru is filled with delicious foods, and I envy that.

Access to the shop: A 3-minute walk from JR Hokkaido "Otaru Station" inside Tarche. "Otaru Narutoya Otaru Ekimae Store" is located here.
Recommended menu: Tebasaki Zangi Zangi
Price: 650 yen
Impression: When it comes to Narutoya, it has to be Zangi! The crispy and fragrant skin is filled with juicy meat. The flavor of the meat itself is excellent! It has a very light and delicious taste that makes you want to keep eating. Definitely worth a try!

I went to Otaru for the first time for work. While Tokyo was hot, Hokkaido is cool! I took the express train from Sapporo Airport to Otaru. It was lunchtime, so I decided to eat at the station. I had planned to eat at a sushi restaurant, but it was closed! So I bought some fried chicken at a nearby stand to eat and think. The half-fried chicken is famous, so I bought 5 pieces. The outside was crispy and crunchy, while the inside was juicy, letting me taste the deliciousness of the chicken. It's great that you can buy just one piece to eat on the go.

Fried chicken! @ Otaru Narutoya
As it started to drizzle, we decided to leave Otaru and head back to Sapporo. I suggested taking the bus back, but due to the strong insistence of the children, we ended up taking the train back. Since we missed having a proper meal, we bought some light snacks to munch on the train. My wife bought some bread, but I opted for fried chicken. Freshly fried chicken is delicious. One piece was quite large, so I ended up feeling quite full. It was a satisfying meal. (The kids ate about half, so I had one and a half pieces.)

When I went to Hokkaido, I had to try Zangi! Finally found Zangi! It was very delicious! Crispy fried to perfection! I wonder if it's a bit different from the ones in Kyoto? Maybe not much different? It was so delicious, so anything is okay!

It is called the Otaru Station Front Store, but in reality, it feels more like a store inside the Otaru Station. It is a commercial area selling souvenirs and local specialty products from Otaru and surrounding towns. There is a station mart called Tarche, and in one corner, there is "Otaru Naruto-ya." They have large flyers and fry the food on the spot, so you can enjoy freshly fried food easily. The convenience of being able to eat it easily is great. I often get off at Otaru Station and stop by about once a month, and I end up buying one or two pieces and eating them on the go. It tastes delicious. Well, you can also sit down and eat, but now "Naruto-ya's" Zangi is also sold in supermarkets in Sapporo, but here you can enjoy your favorite number of freshly fried pieces, which is appealing. This time, I bought two pieces of Zangi. The half-fried chicken is also delicious, but even shameless as I am, I can't eat half-fried chicken while standing. There probably isn't a hero who can do that. If the waiting room is empty, I enjoy it with a beer there, but it has a strong smell, so this time I enjoyed it outside the station. The outside is crispy and crunchy, and when you bite into it, the juicy chicken flavor overflows, making it incredibly delicious. When I get off at Otaru Station, I'll probably buy it again. Thank you for the meal.

Otaru Narutoya ⇒ "http://kouji328.blog59.fc2.com/blog-entry-4247.html" On the first day of a 1 night 2 day tour in Sapporo, we enjoyed sightseeing in Otaru with our family. As the day was coming to an end, we headed to our hotel in Sapporo. Before that, we planned to have dinner at Daruma's Genghis Khan, but since we had eaten only sweet treats from LeTAO, the eldest child wanted something different. So, we went to Naruto located to the right of the entrance of Otaru Station. Naruto is well-known for its deep-fried half chicken. It had been over 10 years since we last visited the main store. The shop had a hut-like design with a cash register window on the left with a hot case and a frying area on the right with a sign saying "demonstration." A man was busy frying the food. The items available were a large zangi for 130 yen and a half chicken for 980 yen. There was also a chicken rice ball for 290 yen. The child wanted a plump zangi, but we decided to go with the half chicken. The hot and crispy half chicken was irresistible, so we decided to eat it immediately. We initially thought of waiting in the waiting area, but the smell of the salted deep-fried half chicken filled the room, so we moved to the platform. The chicken was delicious, with a crispy skin and juicy meat. We all enjoyed it and finished it quickly. Everyone was very satisfied. Even though we wanted to eat more, we resisted as we had Genghis Khan for dinner. The hot and satisfying takeout meal was the perfect choice. The next day, we toured Sapporo city and surprisingly did not come across zangi. Along the way, the child kept saying how they wanted to eat zangi... I also felt a little regret. 84 points Naruto main store ⇒ "http://kouji328.blog59.fc2.com/blog-entry-58.html"

Today, I bought a "zangi" as a snack for the bus ride back to Sapporo from Otaru station. It was delicious with a good seasoning on the hot and crispy chicken. I heard that a shop of the same chain recently opened near Gotanda in Tokyo, so I would like to visit there as well.

The second purpose of visiting Otaru was this! I brought it back to Tokyo and ate it cold, but it was still delicious! The taste of the chicken was strong and the seasoning was good. It was even more delicious than rumored. The photo shows that I ate half of it and only the thigh part remained.
