Located on the 3rd floor of the New Hanabi Building in Osaka's Kitashinchi area, the highly popular tonkatsu restaurant "epais" is a renowned establishment that has been selected as one of the top 100 tonkatsu restaurants five times. The restaurant, which opened in April 2013, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The menu features a variety of premium pork brands, and their signature tonkatsu, fried at a low temperature to achieve a moist and tender texture, is a must-try.
I visited the restaurant on a Wednesday afternoon around 2 pm and managed to place my order just before the last call. There were two other groups of customers, including a foreign couple, which is a testament to the restaurant's popularity. The atmosphere is clean and has a classic Western-style dining feel, while the service is exceptionally friendly and attentive. The staff, consisting of two men and two women, provide excellent service, making you feel right at home.
When it comes to ordering, the staff will explain the menu in detail before you make your choice. I opted for the "Today's Hirekatsu Set (100g)" which came with shredded cabbage, rice, miso soup, pickles, dessert, and a post-meal drink. The attention to detail, including the selection of teas for the drink, was impressive.
The Hirekatsu, with its vibrant pink color and crispy yet tender texture, was a delight to the taste buds. The rice complemented the tonkatsu perfectly, and the miso soup and pickles were flavorful. The dessert and drink were a nice touch to end the meal on a high note.
In conclusion, epais is a fantastic tonkatsu restaurant with great food, atmosphere, and service. The "Today's Hirekatsu Set (100g)" was not only delicious but also reasonably priced at 1,320 yen including tax. If you find yourself in Kitashinchi during lunchtime, I highly recommend paying a visit to epais for a satisfying meal experience.
